3D Frame Packed output

i think you’re right! thank you.

Yes, I haven’t had time to look at it, but that issue is still on my todo list

Thanks for thinking about it. This will make my user experience of the Vero perfect!

Run:

‘sudo apt-get install --reinstall vero3-mediacenter-osmc’

With any luck, a few weeks. I wanted it to be ready for end of next week, but we’re coming up against some tough bugs.

Sam

Oh, cool. :star_struck:

Keep in mind that we want it to be as good as our current kernel is – so this takes time.
We know how fussy you are

If you need any updates on the timeframe, let me know.

Don’t tempt me.

Hi there,

I am following the development of the 3D topic since quite a while and was happy to hear that the frame packed output seems to be implemented now.
I followed the explanation to update to the November version.

My current findings are:

  1. When opening a 3D MKV, i have the choice to select hardware acc…
  2. A small info box informed me, that 3D playback is starting, using the hardware

…unfortunately it does not… I am using a SONY VPL 260…

Same files do work properly with a Raspberry Pi and KODI.

After that I tried to follow the next recommendation by adding

deb http://apt.osmc.tv stretch-devel main

and starting the update process. After the update was finished, I did not have the choice of hardware… any more. So I re-installed the previous November version as describe above.

But again no success. Any idea what I could do additionally?

Thanks, Tabaluga73

Please post some debug logs so we can see what’s going on and check if you are on the right version

Sam

Hi Sam,

thanks for the quick feedback. Could you briefly link me to the topic, what kind of log you need and how I activate it?

Thanks Tabaluga73

Edit:
I did some further tests and found out the following:

Having set the system to UHD leads the player to display 3D-top-down instead of packed frame. Setting the system to FHD leads the player to play the file but you just hear the sound, the picture is black…

Here some extra of the KODI.log, hope that helps:

To get a better understanding of the problem you are experiencing we need more information from you. The best way to get this information is for you to upload logs that demonstrate your problem. You can learn more about how to submit a useful support request here.

Depending on the used skin you have to set the settings-level to standard or higher, in summary:

  • enable debug logging at settings->system->logging

  • reboot the OSMC device

  • reproduce the issue

  • upload the log set either using the Log Uploader method within the My OSMC menu in the GUI or the ssh method invoking command grab-logs -A

  • publish the provided URL from the log set upload, here

Thanks for your understanding. We hope that we can help you get up and running again shortly.

OSMC skin screenshot:

Hi Sam,

I uploaded a log for the 4k. If it is still needed, I can post you the URL… BUT: I found the problem:

It is not just about the resultion but also about the frequency. My KODI starts regularly with 3840x2160@60Hz. Switching to 1920x1080 did not solve the issue as the frequency was still set to 60Hz. Changing the frequency in the system to 23.98 did solve the issue!

Means in other words: OSMC (or KODI?) should recognize the correct resolution / frame rate and change it for playback. Would that be possible?

Thanks, Tabaluga73

Do you have settings>player>videos>adjust display refresh rate> set to On start/stop and sync playback to display disabled? Do you have anything set in the whitelist. If you have the former enabled, and your whitelist empty, then it should adjust to a resolution and frame rate appropriate to the source.

Even if you’re not trying to play 3D material, that’s probably not a good idea. The Kodi UI on the Vero 4K is designed to run at 1080p; and videos will probably look better if you output them at native resolution and let the TV upscale.

It will if you set the resolution to 1080p and enable Adjust Refresh Rate

No, thanks for that. That helps to adjust the frequency correctly.

Not being that deep in the details, but what about 4k material if KODI runs at 1080p? Will it recognize the correct resolution? I just wonder having my experiences with 3D in mind, where KODI did not change the resultion down to 1080p from 2160p.

Yes, after you have configured

OSMC will switch resolution and refresh according to the Video material being played. As of now (due to the quality of the Upscaler) it is recommend to keep the GUI at 1080p

To clarify this a bit further. When you enable adjust refresh rate video (without a whitelist) video at or below your UI resolution will output at your UI resolution at the closest matching frame rate your display supports. Video that is a higher resolution will be output at the higher resolution. That is why having a 4k UI set prevented HD output of your 3D source.

The only exception to this is when you use a whitelist which allows, depending on how it is configured, to switch to resolutions both above and below the UI resolution.

That makes things quite clear. Thanks to all for your support. I will switch my UI to 1080p, knowing that 2160p movies will still be displayed at 2160p.

Is there a kind of explanation about whitelists in the forum and how to set them up?

Thanks to Sam and all the developers. I am quite happy that 3D frame packed is working and that I do not need to run to players for now!:+1:

Thanks, Tabaluga

To best of my knowledge nobody has written one up either here, on the Kodi forum, or anywhere else. The basic bit is you select every resolution and frame rate that you want output. If your TV has a very good upscaler this may give a superior output. The not so basic bit is the UI is also affected while the video is playing and between that and using overscan on your TV for 4:3 content… well you just have to play with it a bit and find out for yourself. It is not something that most people would actually want to do, but it is good to have options for people who want to squeeze the most out of their high end displays.
