Audio volume lower than hoped for

My situation: I have a Demon PMA-50 stereo amp. LG television is connected to Optical 1. Vero 4K is connected to Optical 2 and USB DAC inputs.

The issue: the LG TV outputs a much higher volume than the Vero. So when I switch from Vero to TV, my ears almost explode

This happens on both Optical and USB output, both are equally low volume compared to LG TV.

Is there a way to make the volume output more similar?

The only thing I found was using Volume Gain when playing a video. But this leads to some distortion, if I understand correctly.

Do you have any other suggestions?

If you are using optical and you turn up the main volume on Vero (not the adjustment volume you see while playing a video) to max there should be no reason for it to be quieter than any other optical source.

The same should apply to Vero feeding a USB DAC.

If you post logs, we can check your settings.

This sounds like the type of thing that can happen with Kodi PCM output and Kodi’s internal volume being reduced but this not getting adjusted with the remote as Kodi is controlling the amp’s volume via CEC. Logs will show if the volume is reduced this way, but you could also just use a Kodi remote app on a phone/tablet, or the web interface to see and adjust Kodi’s volume back to 100%. Although regular physical remote control input switches between Kodi volume and CEC control, the network control options tend to only control the Kodi internal volume adjustment.

@grahamh I agree, my expectation is the Vero outputs to optical/USB-DAC at full volume, and volume control is done on the amp. So in my test I set Kodi’s volume to 100%. But 100% volume from Kodi sounds much quieter than 100% volume from the LG television, where both are using an optical connection to the amp.

@darwindesign I don´t think Kodi can control the amp’s volume through CEC, because there is no HDMI connection with the amp. Only the optical and USB inputs are in use on the amp (there is no HDMI input on this amp Denon PMA-50).

I am hoping you can see something wrong in the logs, am curious!

It can’t. I hadn’t looked up that Amplifier to see the specs on it before posting. Your settings are what they should be. Looking through the manual on that Amplifier I didn’t see any option for adjust the input level for the individual inputs so that option is out. I think the only option available to you is going to be adjusting volume amplification if you don’t want the big transition. The “distortion” you get from this isn’t added noise or clipping though if that is what your thinking. It compresses the dynamic range which is probably also something your TV is doing a fair bit of which is why it seems so much louder.

Thanks for your efforts. I will look for another solution.
