Choppy/slow playback on some movies

Hi all,

apologies if this has been discussed before, I did look but couldn’t find anything that matched my problem.

I have the November release of OSMC (Kodi 15.2) on a Pi 2, reading mkv files sitting on a NFS source provided by a box running OMV. The connection is wired using the internal house LAN.

I have half a dozen movies that when I try and play them behave oddly. The sound seems fine but the picture is slow, (looks like it’s in slow motion), and there are artefacts showing, mostly on scene changes.

All the other movies (150+ of them) play absolutely fine, it’s just these 6. Strangely on one of the movies, (I Am Legend), the theatrical version plays fine but the ‘alternate ending’ version suffers from this problem.

None of the movies that suffer from this problem play fine at any point, the picture runs slow right from the off.

In each case all of the movies play absolutely fine from VLC on my PC, (the machine I used to rip the movies from blu-ray), either from a local disc or using an SMB share on the OMV box.

I’ve tried re-ripping a couple of the movies to see if it was a bad rip but get the same problem.

I’ve left most of the settings on default except to tell OSMC about the AV box and its audio capabilities.

Happy to prvide as much info on settings as required…hoping someone can help!

Mediainfo on a problem file would be helpful.

I’m a newbie so apologies if I’m making an incorrect assumption, but have used MediaInfo from MediaArea.net to get what I hope is what you need.

This video uses the VC-1 codec - you’ll need to buy and install the VC-1 codec license from the Raspberry Pi foundation to be able to play it with hardware accelerated decoding.

I’ve ordered the license key, just waiting for it to arrive.

Apologies for raising what appears to be such a trivial problem, at least I now know what else to look for.

That was fast !

It normally takes 24 hours to get the codec license and after posting I noticed the link I gave you said they were closed until January 4th… :smile:

Yup, it sure was…saw the same message as you so didn’t expect to see the license until next week!

Perhaps creating the keys is an automated process, or maybe someone was full of Christmas spirit and took pity on me :slightly_smiling:
