Apologies for this thread. I found others touching on it but nothing definitive that I could see, but I may have missed it.
Currently have a fairly decent PC (16GB RAM, i7, GTX 970) plugged directly into my TV running Kodi on windows. In my Kodi Library is some UHD stuff, mostly 1080p mkv content.
I’m trying to remove the PC from beneath the TV and was considering replacing with a NAS + Vero 4k. But I wanted to know a couple of things first.
As I understand it the library will be indexed and cached on the Vero’s flash memory so will browsing the library be as smooth as my current ‘native’ experience of having direct attached storyage via an SSD? I’m a kodi skinner so I spend a lot of time in browsing etc as I work on my skins.
My Nas and Vero would be connected via Ethernet connections to my router, all of which would be in the same room. Could I expect a fairly swift experience for loading/playing/seeking etc, or would I see delays? My media is currently on WD Reds 5400RPM and I’d actually probably upgrade this for the NAS. The reason I wanted Vero instead of a media server is because I thought native file format support of Kodi would remove a lot of the delays that you get with transcoding.
Would you expect the whole process to feel fairly instantaneous?
Currently I’m using a WIP alpha called Copacetic as it’s the one I’m building. Previously I was using Embuary. I don’t actually know how heavy my skin is. It’s very much focused on the fanart and posts, so there’s not a lot of extra crap or animations in it.
At home we use RPI 3 and Vero 4k (1st Gen) running mainly 1080p files over wired network pulling files from a low powered server with USB connected HDD drive.
Takes a couple of seconds to start playback and once playing there are no glitches or noticeable delays when seeking etc.
We have a few thousand tv episodes indexed by kodi, and again, on all devices you can move around the menus without any noticeable delay.
Will it be as instantaneous as i7 device? probably not - but all our kodi devices are as good as, if not better than, any set top box or app on a TV we use.
For me, not having equipment with a fan by the TV more than makes up for any perceived slowness.
As an existing kodi user I don’t think you would be disappointed in buying a Vero
My files are all served from an old Sandybridge i5 running Windows and i’m using MySQL that connects to various devices running Kodi. There is not a lot of difference between PC, RPi 3B, 3B+, 4, and Vero 4K. For the most part everything that came after RPi 2 has felt like slight improvements in UI speed as there is little to no delays across the board. The only exception to this for me is some of my music views where it has a massive amount of artwork to process. The initial page loading is the same on all of them but trying quickly scroll large lists the PC is able to do this with much of any delay in the artwork showing up. My Vero 4K is a bit faster in this regard than the RPi’s but none feel sluggish to me.
