New installation cant change root passwd

I just got a new Transcent 8gb sd card, and went on installing the latest osmc on it. The problem is that i am changing the root password and although it says that the password has changed i cant log in via putty using root@my_lan_ip_pi or winscp for that matter…
Only if i log in using osmc account and then do su root it will accept the root password.

Using the proper user/pass directly from putty it says : Access denied

Help?

PermitRootLogin yes in sshd_config
