No sound after kodi restart - Your hardware does not support AE_FMT_FLOAT

After every kodi restart I have problems with the sound. To fix that I have the following workaround:

  1. change the audio output from the TV to TV speaker

  2. restart kodi

  3. change the audio output from the TV to HDMI CEC

  4. Audio is working again via HDMI on my soundbar

During the problem I see the following errors in the log:

2026-05-12 15:23:08.108 T:8845 info : CAESinkALSA::InitializeHW - Your hardware does not support AE_FMT_FLOAT, trying other formats

2026-05-12 15:23:08.108 T:8845 info : CAESinkALSA::InitializeHW - Using data format AE_FMT_S24NE3

2026-05-12 15:23:08.112 T:8845 warning : CAESinkAlsa::InitializeHW - Using default alsa values - set failed

2026-05-12 15:23:08.114 T:8845 info : CAESinkALSA::Initialize - Attempting to open device “default”

2026-05-12 15:23:08.119 T:8845 info : CAESinkALSA::Initialize - Opened device “default”

Any ideas how to get this fixed and audio is still working after restart/reboot? (Raspberry Pi 4)

Thanks

Fabian

Can nobody help me to get this fixed?

If needed I can provide more infos.

Thanks

To get a better understanding of the problem you are experiencing we need more information from you. The best way to get this information is for you to upload logs that demonstrate your problem. You can learn more about how to submit a useful support request here.

Depending on the used skin you have to set the settings-level to standard or higher, in summary:

  • enable debug logging at settings->system->logging

  • reboot the OSMC device twice(!)

  • reproduce the issue

  • upload the log set (all configs and logs!) either using the Log Uploader method within the My OSMC menu in the GUI or the ssh method invoking command grab-logs -A

  • publish the provided URL from the log set upload, here

Thanks for your understanding. We hope that we can help you get up and running again shortly.

Hi Tom,

thanks for your reply. I did the following:

  • enable debug log
  • rebooted the device twice time
  • changed the audio output on the TV from HDMI to TV speaker
  • restarted mediacenter
  • changed the audio output on the TV from TV speaker to HDMI
  • audio over HDMI is working
  • Uploaded the logs

Would be great if we can find a solution for this problem :wink:

Thanks

Hi,

Have you tried a complete shutdown and power off?

I suggest after shutting it down, unplugging the pi, tv and soundbar from the mains and leave without power for 10 minutes. The power drain should make everything reset and work as expected.

Regards Tom.

Hi Tom,

this also solved not the problem.

BUT: I played a bit with the TV audio settings. After disabling eARC I can reboot the Pi / restart mediacenter and I don‘t have any audio problems any more.

If somebody run into the same issue look for eARC on your TV and disable this feature.

Thanks and regards

Fabian

Hi,

Glad to hear its sorted. But thisdepends on whether soundbar supports eARC.
