Recent really weird passthrough audio issue

I have used my Vero 4k with passthrough via HDMI for everything for years. This issue has just appeared, about when the problems with the TV database appeared a week or so ago. Not saying they are realted but the timming is suspisious at least.

It effects at least Atmos and DTS-Ma.

With files scanned to the library since then audio passthough sends silence to the amp. Turn off passthrough and it sends sound.

As you can imaging it took some messing about to find it, but below is my acid proof.

Scan new film to library (DTS-Ma in this case).

Play from library, issue occurs.

Remove file from library, play film in file mode and all is well.

Scan video to library, play from library, and issue is back.

I did a lot of messing about findig this, and it may also be that in library mode if the film as another sound track and you switch to that and back it sorts it, but not 100% sure.

Hi, to get a better understanding of the problem you are experiencing we need more information from you. The best way to get this information is for you to upload logs that demonstrate your problem. You can learn more about how to submit a useful support request here.

Depending on the used skin you have to set the settings-level to standard or higher, in summary:

  • enable debug logging at settings->system->logging

  • reboot the OSMC device twice(!)

  • reproduce the issue (play the movie from library which ends in no sound)

  • upload the log set (all configs and logs!) either using the Log Uploader method within the My OSMC menu in the GUI or the ssh method invoking command grab-logs -A

  • publish the provided URL from the log set upload, here

Thanks for your understanding. We hope that we can help you get up and running again shortly.

Thanks for the advice. I did as you asked (only issue it hung on the second reboot, so I had to pull the plug).

This seems to have cured it ! At least for now !

Its possible I made and error but VERY unlikley, so either the reboot / pull power fixed it, or the turning on of debug mode. I turned off rebug mode and rebooted and the problem did not reappear.

I will keep and eye on it and report back.

Update, issue came back with an Atmos file. Rebooted and that sorted it. Guess l need debugging on all the time as a reboot fixes it.

Just ‘caught it in the act’ with passthrough giving no sound on DTS-MA. Log below. Problem was about time 23:20.

May also be causing video output issues, but not got to the route cause.

The debug logging never was advised as a solution to your problem, only to get more information on when, why and how it crashes, so that the root cause can be found. And it seems you ran into the situation where it crashes and provided said logging. Now it is time to wait until they find something and find a fix for it.

Thanks for the help. I never though it was the debug log that fixed it, just noted it was one of the tings I did when it was fixed, as I have since found out its the reboot that fixed it.

Below is a link to another debug log. I rebooted around 15.22, l played the same file just before and directly after. The issue was there before the reboot but gone after.

Ps does not seem to effect Doby Digital plus

On your Denon AVR hold down the power button for a few seconds until you hear it start clicking. It will probably click a few times and turn off then back on (or vice versa, I forget). That should do a soft reset which tends to cure aberrant behavior without changing or losing any of your settings/configuration.

Do not think its in the Denon, as if I removed the file from the library and play it in file mode all is OK.

This tread has evolved a bit as I have found out more about the issue. Thought it time to put all I have in one place, so help developers. So here we go

The issue is in passthroug no sound is sent to the AVR via HDMI

Occurs for Atmos and DTS-MA, do not think it occurs for Dolby Digital +

If you turn off passthrough sound is sent

If you remove the file from the library and play it in file mode the issue does not occur.

If you reboot and play in library mode the issue is gone.

It SEESM I THINK to have occured around the time the media database problem occured and before the fix was rolled out but I am not sure.

Two log files

Around the end of this log file file played with the issue active

https://paste.osmc.tv/uhitixilal

Near the end of this one there is a reboot. Before the reboot the issue occurs, after the reboot playing the same file it is gone. Around 15:22

Hi, I refer to the log set you provided 20 hours before:
From this info, the Vero has sent DTS-HD MA to the Denon AVR.

If the connected TV supports the DTS-HD MA audio format, I suggest—as a further troubleshooting step—temporarily connecting the Vero directly to the TV, thereby taking the AVR out of the equation.
If it works perfectly then, the problem is narrowed down to the AVR and the cabling between the AVR and the TV.
As I mentioned, this only works if the TV supports DTS-HD MA.

Thanks,TV does not support DTS master. Thing is if l remove the file from the library and play it in file mode all is fine. So it’s something to do with the Vero library not AVR etc. Also. Reboot of the Vero fixes it.

@kdp99 This information is confusing. In log set https://paste.osmc.tv/uhitixilal only movie Blade Trinity 2004.mkv was played (4 times). In log set https://paste.osmc.tv/ribowacaya the first playback was blade.ii.2002.4k-kc.mkv … that doesn’t match your description.

What we need is a log set where the last playback demonstrates the issue and contains the information of the current active kodi log and current journal information. DON’T reboot the device after that issue occured but take the log and and provide the log. In addition the timestamp of the last playback would help.

Sorry for confusing things, I wanted the log to show the issue and it working OK as thought this would help.

I have just done this

I enable debugging log

Rebooted x2

Played film about 12:55, Blade Trinity issue occurs.

Here is the log

Many thnaks

Excellent! And now repeat the same procedure, playing the same file from the fle browser without that audio issue for you and provide the log set. Thanks in advance.

Enabled debugging log

Rebooted x2

Removed film from library

Played in file mode about 14:50

All OK

MANY thanks for the help !!

At first glance, I can’t see any difference regarding audio output: in both sets of logs, the Vero outputs DTS-HD MA via HDMI. But…

The Vero’s software version is ancient—it’s still running Kodi Nexus and an inital SW stand from 2024! The only SW change in the past was a Samba package installation in March 2026, nothing all!!!
We generally expect issues reported in the forum to be based on the current release version to prevent waste of our time hunting phantom problems already solved a long time ago…

Anyway, here is my suggestion: First, update to the current software version:

1. Install the latest hotfix: updates2026fix (see OSMC update issues solution)
2. Then, install the latest updates for this box via My OSMC.
3. After that, we’ll see where things stand—means whether the problem still exists at all.

Let us know, if you have any questions.

As this is a Vero 4k, only option is the reinstallation of OSMC 2025.03.1 to get latest greatest software for this device, sorry for not providing more help from me.

I had to stop updates then as it wrecked the response to an IR remote.

The thing is the issue has only appeared in the last 10 days about when the video database problems appeared.

Did you try it anyway? I have to soft reset mine once or twice a year because it starts doing odd shit like not playing certain codecs. I’ve never had it lose my settings in a soft reset and whatever it is doing is not the same as pulling the plug from the wall (which changes nothing for me when my AVR is acting up). There is a different method for initiating a hard reset which is the one where it returns all settings to factory defaults and that is not the one I was suggesting you do.
