RPi2 -> RPi3

I am currently running OSMC (May update) on a RPi2. I want to repurpose that particular device & would like to switch running OSMC on a RPi3, while maintaining all my files, addons & settings.

Is it as simple as popping in the microSD card from the RPi2 into the RPi3? Or do I have to set up the RPi3 separately and then figure out how to move my data?

cheers!

Yes.

Also, remove all clock settings from /boot/config.txt to allow for default clock speeds on the Pi3.

Great. Thanks!

I’ve just gone from Pi 2 -> Pi 3 with the same card and it worked perfectly.

On a related note, what about going the other way? I assume that until such time as there are custom RPi 3 packages in OSMC, I can also take a Pi 3 image and use it on a Pi 2?

Going back should also work as long as the clockspeeds are altered accordingly.

HI Everybody,

I would like to do the same(RPI2->RPI3). In my config.txt the following settings are there. Should be there by default anything else releated to clockspeed or is it only added by anybody else manually? I guess the MPG2, WVC values anyhow should be updated. Am I right?

gpu_mem_1024=256
hdmi_ignore_cec_init=1
disable_overscan=1
start_x=1
disable_splash=1
decode_MPG2=0xXXXXXX
decode_WVC1=0xYYYYYY

Thanks!

You can keep that as is, no need for any clockspeed settings.
You can just remove the two decode lines or replace them with the one applicable for the Pi3 if you also bought the licenses for the Pi3
