I have a Hisense PX1 Pro projector, and I’m having a problem with washed-out blacks when I play certain MKV files with Dolby Vision Profile 7 (MEL and FEL). It doesn’t happen with all of them, and that’s what has me suspicious. I know it probably has nothing to do with Vero V DV implementation, but I don’t understand why it looks fine with some files and so bad with others.
Some recent movies, for name a few:
They Will Kill You (MEL)
Obsession (FEL)
But some others are okey (and they are quite heavy on their FEL layers):
Saving private Bryan (FEL)
Ben Hur (FEL)
Braveheart (FEL)
Any clues? I wouldn’t like to move to any other device to rely on tone mapping. I also have a HTPC with a 12th i3 and JRiver player latest version solves the issue (even with FEL, it now supports FEL), obviously using tone mapping, but this is not an option in Vero V, since VS10 is out of the discussion.
Hi graham, sure, if problem persist after staging I will try to share with you a couple of examples, some chapters of washed and not washed files. Thanks!
First, thank you for sending clips of films I might actually want to watch!
But they all play nicely on my Philips OLED - black is black. You have a theory that your PJ may be struggling with picking the right L2 trims. We pass them all through and I believe that’s what’s supposed to happen. Maybe you can edit out irrelevant L2s with dovi-tools to test your theory?
I’ve removed all L2 trims with dovi_tools, and I get “perfect” blacks, and also just keep L2 100 nits trim, a bit washed but no so washed compared to keep all values, 100, 600 and 1000 nits.
Obviously is a problem of my projector handling those values and trying to tonemap so high nits values for what a projector is capable of, in consecuence the black leves are elevated.
My question now is, are you able to, by using sort of advance configuration, allow trim managment in Vero V, I know the baseline drawback - believe me, I’m a digital product designer - which is provide so granular advanced options to a product that is intended to provide simplified user experience, but Vero V already has some specific devices workarounds. Maybe not a whole trim manager (I know people also asked about allow L5 support) but something like this (no techie explanations)
“Fix Dolby Vision black levels on projectors” Some projectors show lifted or washed-out blacks on certain Dolby Vision titles. Enable this if you experience it.
Under Display Settings, on Expert Mode.
Remove on my MKVs doesn’t make sense because maybe, in the future, I will have another device, another projector with better DV handling or a OLED TV.
I think you had better complain to Hisense. I think if @ht2tweak had come across this issue we would have heard already. Multiple L2 entries is not unusual.
I’ve got a PX2 Pro I could potentially test with next week if you send some clips my way.
Not sure if I’ll be able to reproduce but there’s no harm in trying.
I have an LG G2 oled and similar problem with some titles depending on the source. Blacks are raised and Kodi UI colors look washed. I will test the staging and report back here.
