Unstable OSMC starting from disk image 2024.08-1

I recently got a Vero V and find it highly unstable after initial use.

After unpacking and hooking it up to my TV I selected a different language than English, in this example I used Dutch. After that I’m unable to select time zone Europe/Amsterdam, because as soon as I do that OSMC crashes. When selecting English as the language it does work.

After finalizing the setup wizard I tried to select another skin: Estuary. Doing so results 9/10 in a sad face screen (crash) and reverting back to the OSMC skin. The moments it does work it only works until I do a reboot. After the reboot the skin is back to the OSMC skin. Even after updating to the latest version is was unstable.

I tried to reimage the Vero V with latest image 2024.10-1 but the problem persists. Reimaging it with 2024.08-1 results in the same issues. When I go back to 2024.05-1 it seems to be working and the skin change is persistent, even after reboots.

After another clean reimage with 2024.08-1 I used apt-get dist-upgrade to upgrade to the latest version. After that changing the skin was also stable and everything worked as expected. It feels like that starting from image 2024.08-1 there is a bug in the system which makes it unstable.

Anyone else experiencing the same behaviour?

Not seeing that here but the newer images have Kodi v21 and the older image you tried would be based on Kodi v20.

Some logs should let us see what’s going on.

Here are some logs.

This is a new out of the box Vero V. The skin Sloth is just a copy of Estuary skin. After selecting it and confirming that I want to keep the new skin it crashes and goes back to the default OSMC skin. This also happens with Estuary skin.

So every now and then it does not crash and I can use the new skin. But after a reboot the systems boots back with the OSMC skin.

Hard to tell what the issue is without full logs.

I can change to Estuary just fine here. Full logs should let me see what’s going on and verify which version of OSMC you are running

The SKIN issues seem to be fixed in the latest release: 2025.03.01 as mentioned in the bug report:

  • OSMC Skin: fix an issue which could prevent installation of other OSMC skin variants

The issue resolved was only related to OSMC skins (such as the Scope skin), not Estuary.
