I hope someone with a much bigger brain than my own could cast a knowledgeable eye over the attached log and tell me what the errors mean and why updates are not working (It seems that a file is missing but hey, what do I know)

You might have an issue with an unsupported skin. Try mv .kodi/userdata/guisettings.xml guisettings.xml and reboot
Also suggest to use grab-logs -A to upload logs.

Nope, all 3rd party skins have been removed. Only Confluence and the default OSMC skin remain.
Is grab-logs -A better than using the Kodi Log Uploader plugin?

Yes.
It is the same as using the all logs option in the My OSMC log uploader, but it can still be used even if Kodi is not working.
