Vero V just bought the usb hub unfortunately getting "unsafe storage device removal"

Tips for that error say try plugging to a powered hub, but this is the osmc one fresh out of packing andcan see the power is working.

It’s just a little SanDisk extreme 2tb flash, so I’d have expected that to be OK, but just tried a SanDisk 128gb stick instead and that gives the same error.

The stick definitely worked fine Sunday night straight into the same usb 3 port on the vero, it’s exfat and I wanted to check that format would be OK.

When do you get the error, when removing the stick?

No, sadly as soon as I either plug in the hub or turn on thie vero.

You get the previous message (which I’m afraid I can’t quote) where it detects the drive, then I get excited, then a few seconds later the error.

No problem, I can see previous message.

Can you upload a log?

Do you have any chunky power drains connect to the device like a DVB tuner or spinning hard disk?

The other reason you could see a unsafe message could be a loose connection somewhere with a cable. This wouldn’t be power related but just a poor connection.

Thanks as always, having checked half a dozen threads nearly asked how to Upload logs then remembered the menu https://paste.osmc.tv/bowavukalu

I’ve rechecked cables, as you know the osmc hub ones are robust for power, into the hub and into the vero. It’s the same for the extreme drive too, indeed the latter I plugged into a pc USB port Sunday and copied over 1.5tb without a glitch, then moved (overly) confidently to the hub next day and started scratching my head.

Can you send me a quick link to the devices you’re using?

The flash drive certainly won’t consume a lot of power and wouldn’t saturate demands of the Vero V let alone the hub.

Can you please:

  • Try just the USB flash drive on the powered hub? Any disconnect messages?
  • If so, please try it directly connected to the Vero V.
  • Confirm which port you plugged your hub in to? The USB3 or USB2 port?

Cheers

Sam

Thanks for your continued support.

  1. Two devices
  1. Just the flash (128) errored in the hub too, that was about 2305. About 2308 I plugged in the flash without the hub and that worked as expected. I’ve uploaded a log here just in case https://paste.osmc.tv/wwixatqoo
  2. In every test it’s been plugged into the usb 3

Most welcome.

Can you temporarily try the USB 2 port?

Does a direct connection with each device as suggested in my last post help?

Sam

That’s interesting

USB hub into USB 2 port, both devices plugged in and appear simultaneously as expected

And they don’t appear simultaneously at all under the USB3 port?

A new log (reboot twice) would be useful to show differences.

They’ve never appeared whether separately or together on the hub on the usb 3.

The flash alone did appear on the 3 when connected directly. I don’t think the extreme did, without also then ejecting.

So two reboots - should I remove the hub and drives?

I did leave it scanning a tb or so overnight and that seemed to work, but clearly big difference in speeds.

Contrary to what I said above, two reboots and the extreme 2tb has been successfully detected when plugged directly into USB 3.

Giving it a scan of the films and TV folders there to see how it goes.

Keep me posted

Sam

Managed to plug it into the usb 3 and have it recognized, managed to reimport all the library and fixed the thumbnails which weren’t present.

Unfortunately went to check it tonight and the Extreme has stopped showing up within /media/. In case it was due to lack of power I plugged it into the hub and plugged that into the usb 3, performed a restart but no detection so I’ve grumpily turned it off

Should we try swap the hub out?

Did you have issues before the hub? If not, then let’s swap it out.

Email sales@osmc.tv with order # and link to this thread.

That’s very kind of you.

To be honest this is the first time I’ve used usb, since I bought the vero v, I previously used smb as the same drive was plugged into my router, unfortunately I’m now on an inferior ISP router with no USB port, hence why I thought I’d go this route.

That’s fine. Send me an email and I’ll take things from there

As it’s 2AM for both of us now, we best get some rest. Have a good weekend.

@sam_nazarko sorry to bother you again, one last question

Just your opinion - is there any value in me performing a factory reset on the vero or would that be a waste of time as the issue is clearly usb related?

You could try reinstall OSMC but I’m not sure it will make a difference.

Would be interesting to know the drive’s power draw via lsusb and if that varies on USB2 vs 3 ports

I can certainly check.

I guess there’s a pointer to your earlier suggestion if the drive is constantly being detected and ejected when plugged into USB 3 and the hub, yet if I remove the hub and plug same drive straight into USB 3 it will successfully scan hundreds of GBs of content.

Just so weird given that you tend to think of a powered hub as a comparatively straightforward device
