Washed out, dull, dim color/video on HDR/DV playback

Note, that I’ve noticed this lately since I started testing the staging builds again. Not sure if it applies to the stable builds.

Playback of UHD HDR10 or DV material results in washed out, dull, dim color/video. If I stop playback, go into system > display and toggle use limilted color range , then restart playback all looks correct. It doesn’t matter whether use limited color range is enabled or disabled upon boot, the problem remains. I just need to toggle it to the other position to get correct video.

If you’re attemting to re-create:

The issue only occurs with full size UHD rips that I’ve done using MakeMKV. UHD files that I’ve downloaded, which are smaller and further compressed, do not exhibit the issue.

Doh! The toggle of use limilted color range is a red herring. I went looking for something to fix the issue when all was needed was to stop and then restart the playback. After the restart of playback the video was normal.

What happens if you jump forward 10 seconds and then back again? I’ve seen the same behaviour and this fixed it for me.

If the backwards jump starts playback at the beginning that works. If I’m further into the media then the backward jump does not help.

I’ve had an issue with at least one DV file starting after a fresh reboot with washed out colours. If i stop it then start it again, it’s fine and plays in DV okay.
