Hardware acceleration switch for files

Bit of an older topic, but I’m running into more and more 10bit AV1 files, and the Vero 4k is struggling with it, dropping like half the frames on playback. Would it be possible to detect when files aren’t playing well, and offer an automatic ffmpeg conversion to something less compressed? I can do it myself through ssh from my phone or laptop, but it would be really cool if OSMC could figure it out by itself.

The Vero is a brilliant device, and might be the most reliable and durable piece of tech I’ve ever owned. I’d get one again in a heartbeat, but there’s no real need yet, aside from struggling with AV1.

I would suppose ffmpeg conversion (which would have to be done in software) would be at least as much strain on the CPU as playing AV1 in software.

I can recommend you upgrade to Vero V if you have lots of AV1s to play. It has AV1 decoding in hardware.

Yeah, I just noticed the 4K is reaching end of life support wise as well, which is fair enough. I’ll consider upgrading!

Ffmpeg sure is slow, but it can run batches overnight if I have to.

If it was being converted to another format that we do support in hardware then that would be even slower…
