Over-bright subtitles in HDR, but no GUI Peak luminance option

Even if you saw the option, it wouldn’t do anything. Same with ‘Adjust display HDR mode’ in Player settings. We need to remove that one.

Hi @mceron

Hopefully the issue is now addressed.

I’d appreciate it if you could test this and provide feedback before we potentially release this as an update to other users. To test this update:

  1. Login via the command line
  2. Run the following command to add the staging repository:
    echo 'deb http://apt.osmc.tv bullseye-devel main' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/osmc-devel.list
  3. Run the following commands to update: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade && reboot
  4. Your system should have have received the update.

Please see if the issue is resolved.

I also recommend you remove /etc/apt/sources.list.d/osmc-devel.list after updating.

This will deactivate the staging repository. You can do so with the following command:
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/osmc-devel.list.

Please note that we will automatically disable this update channel after 14 days on your device in case you forget to do so to ensure that your system reverts to the stable update channel.

Hi @grahamh !

Thanks a lot for adding this so quickly! I’m impressed.

I’ve updated following your instructions and I now have the setting to update luminance in PQ mode. I tested it and it does dim both my subtitles and also Kodi’s GUI when I’m watching an HDR movie.

I tested the same file with unmapped subtitles and it works very well.

I’ve decided to lower the setting from the default 40% to 20%. I still want to test this at night, I have a bright room. But I can confirm that the setting definitely works!

Am I right to assume that the GUI peak luminance in HDR PQ mode option affects all subtitles, tone-mapped and not tone-mapped subtitles? If I were to set it to 50% to make not tone-mapped subtitles look comfortable, then the tone-mapped subtitles would be too dark, right?

AFAIK Kodi doesn’t know whether a subtitle is tonemapped or not so I’m guessing you’re correct. But subtitling is a mystery to me. This feature should behave the same as on other platforms so if there’s an issue you might look on the Kodi forum.

Does this setting work with the Vero V?

I have set GUI peak luminance in HDR PQ to 5%, but the GUI and subtitles are still too bright while playing HDR.

Is it because it’s not PQ mode? If so, is there a way to control that?

The setting doesn’t affect things when you are playing SDR, if that’s what you mean.

I mean when playing an HDR video and the TV recognises it as HDR. I’ve tried several HDR10 samples along with Dolby Vision.

When I set GUI peak luminance in HDR PQ to 1% or 99% it makes no difference.

It’s the latest OSMC version (2025.08-1).

To get a better understanding of the problem you are experiencing we need more information from you. The best way to get this information is for you to upload logs that demonstrate your problem. You can learn more about how to submit a useful support request here.

Depending on the used skin you have to set the settings-level to standard or higher, in summary:

  • enable debug logging at settings->system->logging

  • reboot the OSMC device twice(!)

  • reproduce the issue

  • upload the log set (all configs and logs!) either using the Log Uploader method within the My OSMC menu in the GUI or the ssh method invoking command grab-logs -A

  • publish the provided URL from the log set upload, here

Thanks for your understanding. We hope that we can help you get up and running again shortly.

OSMC skin screenshot:

I tested again after rebooting twice with debug logging on.

I first tested with the DV file I wanted it for. I set the GUI Peak luminance to 1%, then 99% then back to 0%. Actually it did make a difference, though it wasn’t dramatic. But good enough.

I then tested with some other HDR10 samples. The first one the GUI was too dark at 0%. The last one I tried, it was too bright at 0%, seemed to have no effect.

So basically it seems like it just varies, perhaps by video. But I could get it good enough for the file I care about, so I’m happy enough.

Anytime, still the log is here if it’s useful: https://paste.osmc.tv/widoneguma

Some other details: The TV is an LG C1 OLED55C16LA. As far as I know, this isn’t a regression; it’s the first time I tried this setting.

OK. Of course there are different kinds of subtitles. I don’t know that they are all adjustable by that GUI brightness setting. I’m no expert - most movies come in my native tongue :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s also the GUI, the samples don’t have subtitles. I just open the OSD with the progress bar.

I see. We’ll look into that then. It should be consistent across HDR10, HLG and DV.
