Fresh install, trying to connect with ssh using putty. Get the error server unexpectedly closed the connection. Connecting with sftp in filezilla works fine. Connecting with ssh in powershell works fine. Just not with putty. Any ideas?

Make sure your version of Putty is the current version. Older versions will not work.
