[TESTING] Linux 4.9 kernel and improved video stack for Vero 4K / 4K +

Yes, depending if it is HDR or HDR10+ you will see it in the left top corner info field that you also can recall with the “i” button on the Panasonic remote.

The USB Ethernet adapter is working again.
But the greatest improvement is the again flawlessly working BT - all problems with my Harmony Hubs are gone (Had to re-pair often)

Thanks for your great support on this now perfect device (for a 3D user :slightly_smiling_face:)

@CaptainMoody FYI

Just updated and BT kept working !!

Problem found - AVR will not pass HDR information! (Denon AVR-4520 HDMI 1.4). Vero direct to tv works fine and displays HDR. Even with an HDMI 1.3 cable…

I guess the Vero doesn’t know this though and doesn’t try to output it as SDR (or at least doesn’t look like it).

Time for an HD fury or something I guess.

I just ran the update and everything works fine.
Bluetooth (Harmony) works like a charm.

I’m glad that I decided to test this version. I noticed that for the last couple of months whenever I did an update, the version number of Kodi stayed 18.2 RC1. I never payed much attention to this issue because my Vero 4k+ kept working. The thing is that I didn’t notice the improvements that were made but again I though it was just me.
When I first tried to test this version I had a lot of issues. Every video I played was stuttering and the sound didn’t work.
So I decided to do a fresh install of OSMC. And now I noticed the changes (also Kodi changed to version 18.6) in the regular version and even more so in the new test version. So I think for the past 6 months I have been doing updates that weren’t really updates (although stange that I didn’t get errors).

just tried 4.9 with natively interlaced 1080/50i/h264 mkv files and the all the judder issues I saw with 3.14 on studio video are gone, motion handling/detail are very good.

Not sure if it’s today’s kernel that’s causing this, but I’m back to skipping frames like crazy in Billy Lynn’s Long Half-Time Walk. (Even when copied to local flash storage).

Can I get a sample of that again? Somehow I’ve lost it.

Can someone also try John Wick 2? I remember a few minutes in there was the motorcycle scene which used to cause problems.

If you want to force SDR this should be possible without additional equipment

I think the TV is advertising that it supports HDR but the AVR is not physically passing the information. I’ll play with the tv settings to see if I can turn off hdr support, for now.

When I connected directly to the tv, EOT HDR 4K 10 bit was showing a lot of artifacts, but it was with an old 1.3 cable so I need to test this further.

If your AVR doesn’t support HDR, try:

echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/class/amhdmitx/amhdmitx0/force_hdr

I’ll try and put together a small sample video tomorrow. (This isn’t trivial - my standard 2 minute test clip is about 1.5GB!). Can you give me an upload link?

Unfortunately I don’t have a way of facilitating file uploads that big yet.

I’m working on a solution for large file uploads (a new file uploader and online MediaInfo solution), but it’s still in development.

A MEGA or Dropbox link is probably the best way.

@WilliamG sent me the original sample. Perhaps he still has it in his DropBox.

If you give me a link that can handle 500MB I’ll scan for a 30-40 second clip that skips consistently. (I just wanted to explain why I can’t upload my existing test clip tonight).

You could ZIP it in to 500MB segments.

I have Billy Lynn’s and I’m not seeing any frame skips in a simple quick test. And I’m mega sensitive. Is it all the time or…?

Also, Sam, as you said, 4.9 doesn’t improve the crazy frame drops with subs at times. Did you get to test that video I sent you?

It’s so obvious it’s funny. Frame rate probably drops to around 10-15 during the intro.

No – I haven’t tested it yet.
There are a few more changes I want to make to 4.9 first. I’ll check it in a couple of days.

Cool beans. Will await your testing. It’s an easy one since it’s so obvious and repeatable.

It comes and goes. The scene where they’re doing the stadium show and walking behind the three Destiny’s Child singers skips pretty consistently.
