TPLink WN725N does not work with OSMC

Install new OSMC version, maybe it will solve your problem.

Hi,

I ordered an official raspberry power supply (2A) + new dongle as suggested (820.11n) and a WD external HDD.
I am waiting the order arrive.

I updated OSCM the day before I started this thread. My question for apsikus is: why are you suggesting to me to update OSMC? Is there any fix have been supplied on its driver in the last one/two weeks?
If so, I’ll do it.
If it is just a suggestion, I’ll do it too, but without any fixes I can’t imagine the driver will work magically.

Topic was created week ago. Yesterday they have released new version of OSMC.
I had similar issues with this dongle and OSMC 2015.01-1. And no solution.
I have prepared SD card with new version, and problems has disapeared. At least till now

Hi,

Here my updates. I am still waiting for dongle 802.11n.
Hi attached raspberry official power supply, I update osmc today but dongle still not work.
Problem is the same.

I received also a Western Digital Elements and attached to my Raspberry. Doing dmesg I found this:

and if I do sudo fdisk -l I only see my SD partitioned in FAT and Linux FS. I do not see a device /dev/sda.

This time when I attach External HDD everything still work properly but HDD is not recognized.
I start thinking a power hub is necessary here with at least 3A.
For wi fi dongle I think it has some incompatibility with OSMC.

My configuration is Raspberry with USB IRC + Dongle WI FI + External HDD + Official Power Supply 2A.

I think at this point you should try a power hub. Is the new HDD self powered, or powered via USB?

Have you seen a small rainbow on the upper right of the screen?

Hi,

I did some additional test and I think it is a power issue. TP Link is absolutely not usable (very waste of money).
From HDD perspective probably Raspberry and WD Elements 1Tb work properly alone but adding IRC and dongle is too much. Sometime I heard some sounds on HDD and according to WD troubleshooting it could be a power issue. When I play movies I have some instability.
Probably I waste money buying the official power supply too.

In fact Plusberry is a solution containing Raspberry + HDD 2.5" SATA + IRC + Donkey and it is powered with 3A Power Supply. I do not have yet the new dongle but at this point I think I need more power supply.

Here what I have now:

  1. Raspberry PI 2 Model B
  2. HDD with NO external power supply http://www.amazon.it/WD-Elements-Hard-Esterno-Portatile/dp/B00CRZ2PRM
  3. Official raspberry power supply http://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B00MBH6XNS?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00
  4. Dongle TP Link WN725N
  5. IRC with remote control
    http://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B00CHG06TK?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
  6. I am waiting for dongle 802.11n.

What to do now?
What Power Hub I should buy?

Is it better I buy Plusberry with Enclosure + PCB + 3A Power Adapter + Internal cables for 65$ or there are better alternative solutions?

Consider that once I have solved all my issues, my next problem will be the enclosure. I need something to contain my raspberry + HDD and so on. The only elegant thing I have found is Plusberry.

PS
WD sells WD PI Drive solution but it is not shipped in Italy, so please do not suggest me this solution.

Unfortunately you have not attached any logs so it is hard to troubleshoot. But did you add max_usb_current=1 to /boot/config.txt

To get a better understanding of the problem you are experiencing we need more information from you. Please see How to submit a useful support request - General - OSMC for advice on how to help us.

You didn’t answer one of my questions, have you seen a rainbow rectangle in the upper right of your screen?

But without that answer, I can pretty much guess that it’s a power problem. The Pi is going to struggle to power everything you have connected to it. A cheap solution would be to just pick up an inexpensive powered USB hub and connect the HDD and WiFi to it.

Hi,

I am a software developer and I do this job professionally. I know that information provided are not sufficient to analyze it. I am still investigate into the issue for the moment. My general impression is that it is a power issue. I’ll update you on this.
I haven’t used max_usb_current=1. Should I activate it?
No rainbow on video.

Can you suggest me a good power hub?
Thanks

Yes if you have a USB Wifi adapter add that to /boot/config.txt and reboot.

Hi one question,

I looked at Wi PI Drive configuration:

I noticed that power supply is connected with a Y cable to Raspberry and HDD. So the power supply power both the devices.

In my case I have my power supply attached to Raspberry, then HDD, Dongle and IRC attached on Raspberry USB. Could be this the issue?

I mean, when a cable is attached to Raspberry how it power the USB device? USB has 4 wires (2 for power and 2 for data) are these two wires connected directly to the input power supply?

In this case the Y cable is unnecessary, otherwise this could be the issue. What do you thik?

This is the solution that WD has chosen to ensure the drive get’s enough power.
Normally with a quality powersupply and the max_usb_current=1 setting the Pi should be able to power a 2.5 drive.
But if you want to be more save either get such a Y-Cable solution or a power usb hub with extra power supply.

I asked two times, sorry if I ask you again … can you link me a good power usb?

Not really my expertise as I don;t own any. But how about you first figure out if you need one? Add the command, reboot and then check if everything is working.

Hi sasadangelo,
I have nearly the same configuration: Raspberry pi 2, 2TB Western Digital 2.5" USB hard disk drive, Logitech KT400 keyboard USB dongle and a TP-LINK 823N wireless adapter. My psu is a LA-530 5V@3A max. All the USB peripherals are directly attached to the Raspberry without any powered USB hub.
I’ve never experienced power supply problems.
I’ve been using the TP-LINK 725N adapter but, like you, I have had frequent wifi disconnections, so I’ve decided to buy a new TP-LINK 823N wireless adapter. The old TP-LINK 725N wifi adapter, even if plugged via powered USB, is unstable with OSMC and is a slow wifi device also (~1,2 MB/s max speed in file transfer).
Please add the “max_usb_current=1” string in your /boot/config.txt and reboot as advised in previous posts. It should work without any powered USB hub :slightly_smiling:

Cheers, Kranz

Hi all,

Thank you for replies. I resolved all my problems here how:

  1. today arrived new wifi dongle 820.11n and it worked immediately without any issues.
  2. I powered everything with Raspberry 2A official power supply
  3. I added to Raspberry IRC, WIFI and HDD 1Tb and HDD started to have power issues (WD disks usually emits a sound). I configured max_usb_current=1 and rebooted.

Everything works perfectly.
Thanks you everybody.

PS 1
I added also a keyboard without issues

PS2
My next issue is to find a good enclosure but this could be subject for another thread. Thank you for support!!!
