Welcome
First and foremost, welcome to our support forum. We are all volunteers here who help others in our spare time, and as such, we would appreciate it if you could take the time to read this post. Doing so will ensure that you’re able to get help quickly and solve any problems you may be having.
We ask that you keep the discussion here civil and refrain from profanity or abusive language. Our software is used by people of all age groups so please do keep that in mind when you are posting. If you see anything you think is inappropriate please ‘flag’ it so that it is brought to the attention of a moderator.
Post meaningful content
Most likely you are using this forum for help and support which is great! It is imperative that you are able to identify the problem you are having and what you would like to resolve. If you are able to identify your problem and steps that you have taken to try and resolve it, we will be able to rule out possible problems a lot more easily.
You might not be posting about a problem you’re having, but instead about something you’d like to see in a future version of our software. Again, try and be as clear as possible and explain what you’re trying to achieve.
Use existing resources
If you need some help, it’s likely someone’s had a similar problem to you in the past. We are frequently overwhelmed with support requests, and it would be appreciated if you could search for your answer first. It will also demonstrate to us that you’ve tried to solve your issue as well as rule out some potential causes of an issue you might be having.
Here are some useful resources
Allow us to help you
It goes without saying that the better we can understand a problem you might be having, the more likely we can help you fix it. When you make a post, you may be asked to provide a log. You can read more about obtaining logs on our wiki here
These are best uploaded to a Pastebin website. We recommend you use our official Pastebin which is hosted at paste.osmc.tv as we can regularly process the pastes to identify common issues and in turn improve our product.
Be considerate
Everyone wants their post read and addressed, and sometimes it can be difficult. Please make sure you abide by the following:
- If you find a post where a user has a similar problem to you, do not just post +1. Provide some logs or additional information that can help us find out what’s gone wrong.
- Please do not ‘hijack’ a user’s thread to post about a different and unrelated issue. Instead, start a new thread.
- Please ensure that you start a topic in the correct category
- Please do not double post or post in multiple categories. It only creates a mess and doesn’t mean we’ll see your post any faster!
Rather than posting “+1” or “Agreed”, use the Like button. Rather than taking an existing topic in a radically different direction, use Reply as a New Topic.
OSMC’s Piracy Policy
OSMC is software that allows users to play back content from a variety of sources which may not necessarily be legal. However it is important that we make clear that we do not endorse this and we cannot offer support for any add-ons or streams which facilitate this:
-
All discussions dealing directly with or linking to add-ons, websites, or services that violate US copyright laws (“pirated content”) will be closed when a forum moderator has been made aware of them. The original poster or add-on creator may provide a link to a website not hosted by XBMC for further discussion and inquiries.
-
Discussions for add-ons that link directly to pirated content and enables the user to access that content through the add-on will be shut down.
-
All links to pirated content will be removed.
-
“Pirated content” addons, websites, and services typically do not include the following (to be determined on a case-by-case basis if nessesary):
-
The add-on does not actually perform the act of accessing pirated content (“mistaken identitiy”) [For example, Sickbeard, which performs no actual downloading or streaming.]
-
The add-on has the potential to access pirated content, but is potentially useful for downloading legal content as well. [For example, an add-on that downloads torrents is not, itself, a problem, since a torrent can cover a wide variety content, including legally distrubuted videos.]
-
The add-on links/accesses content in a similar way to a normal web browser. This is done under the assumption that if the content owner did not want the content streamed, the owner should have not made the content available to be streamed in their site. [For example, the Bluecop Repository.]
-
The add-on accesses content with permission of the content owner, the content is “copyleft” (Copyleft - Wikipedia), or the add-on accesses content without the clear disapproval of the content owner. XBMC will do its best to comply with DMCA-related takedown requests.
Thread originators or add-on developers may petition Forum Moderators to re-open a thread that was closed if he or she believes one of the above exceptions applies.
-
Fair use exceptions apply for issues such as small video samples for testing and debugging, fanart and related artwork, video and audio summaries, subtitles, etc.
-
These rules apply only to the forum. They do not apply to the XBMC Addon Repository. At no point will any user be prevented from using XBMC Media Center as they so choose, nor will they be prevented from adding additional Addons not in the XBMC Addon Repository or additional addon repositories.
