1080p MKV h.264 No Sound/Stuttering Video

Everytime I try to play a 1080p Movie in MKV format it will lose sound and the video stutters, almost like it is playing in slow motion. When I first start the movie it seems to work fine for about 5-10 seconds then the sound cuts and the stuttering starts. This happens on all 1080p movies.

I am able to play TV shows in MKV format just fine and they are usually 720p.

This only happens on the Vero. When I play them on my computer or my Pivos XIOS DS the file plays fine.

Does anyone have some suggestions on what I can do to fix this?

  • Are you on the latest version?
  • Can you upload a debug log?
  • Can you upload ‘MediaInfo’ output of a problematic file

Thanks

Sam

I was reading through the help forum for Vero and came across this post: Vero network speed - choppy playback - #7 by henrik

I ran this command sudo ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 duplex full autoneg on and all the movies I tested worked great.

So I am guessing the issues described in that thread was my problem.

So to ensure the Vero always runs 100 duplex I just need to add the following to etc/rc.local?

“sleep 10
sudo ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 duplex full autoneg on”

Correct?

That will work. We will look at providing this as an option in My OSMC in the future.

Sam

No need to use sudo as rc.local already runs as root, and make sure you leave the exit 0 line at the end.

The video you posted has a bitrate of 35Mbps which is fairly high (possibly a full rate blu-ray rip) so any network problems would cause it to stutter.

What kind of switch are you using ? The issue you’re seeing happens when the switch does not support or does not have enabled Ethernet flow control, which if your server is also quite fast will send data in bursts faster than the Vero can process it. (> 470Mbps) If you can enable flow control on the switch or have another switch sitting around that you could try that is the preferred solution, otherwise dropping back to 100Mbit as you already have is a usable workaround.

Obviously this limits your maximum network throughput to 100Mbps - with Gigabit still enabled and a flow control capable switch you’ll see a maximum throughput of around 470Mbps. (On a network speed test such as iperf)
