3d-mvc

Considering the lack of 3D TVs on the market today, I suspect the chip-maker will consider 3D support to be low priority. We are lucky there is still any support for it at all.

Projectors are still being released with 3D support and I heard a rumour that one of the major TV manufacturers were considering including 3D support for one of there future ranges, so hopefully it will be around for a while yet.

I am very glad to hear that 3D is still being pursued with AmLogic. Thank you for keeping us updated Sam! Personally, it is the number one thing I would like resolved since I have thousands of 3DBDs so re-encoding is not an option.

Reviving this topic since I’m thinking of switching back from Zidoo to Vero again after the DV support, missing the excellent support here. However, 3D is still important for me. I don’t have problems doing transcoding for some select titles - is there a list available of the problematic titles?

For now Gravity seems to be the only problematic one for me as I remuxed the Atmos track from the Diamond Edition with the 3D MVC track for the best possible version. I could live with the very slight loss in picture quality when doing reencoding at high bitrates.

Don’t have a list of titles but fortunately it is very few that are affected

Sam

Maybe we can compile a list… would help to know. Affected 3D titles AFAIK:

  • Avatar (2009) (original 2010 Panasonic exclusive or the 2012 limited edition) (macroblocking issue occurs for example at around 00:10:42, when Grace is getting on her feet, holding a cigarette)
  • Avengers (2012)
  • A Christmas Carol (2009)
  • Gravity (2013)
  • Ready Player One (2018)

Thanks, Avatar, Gravity and Avengers are interesting because the 3D versions lack the superior Atmos tracks present on 4K or Special Edition releases. That’s why remuxes produce the best possible 3D version here. I’ll try to get the FRIM encoder running and will do a comparison on my Zidoo with the reencoded versions before I decide whether to switch back to a Vero. Coming from software development myself I’m pretty sure that this topic is right at the bottom at AmLogic unfortunately.

It’s frustrating that we could never solve this issue.

We pushed and pushed and AML acknowledged it but I think it was just resigned to a corner. AML bought the IP block that does 3D but it is quite apparent that they never fully understood or implemented it properly.

Thankfully it’s just a couple of titles. Really 4 so far as the recent ā€˜Avatar’ 3D release plays fine.

For what it’s worth, the macro-blocking does not appear on SBS or TAB files, and now that OSMC supports Full SBS/TAB, on the few movies I’ve noticed it on, I just re-rip them to one of those formats.

Correct, only MVC content is affected

New 3D coming  …
