Alternative remote recommendations

I have been using Vero V for some time and I have been thinking about getting another remote for it. I am not happy how the new receiver misses button presses compared to Vero 4K+. Long presses often register incorrectly as short press, maybe due to switch bounce, and can be annoing when trying to open the subtitles menu. Lastly, the remote feels a bit cheap.

So, I am asking if any of you have recommendations for alternative high quality remotes that work well with Vero V. I have grown used to Vero V button layout so something similar would be great.

There’s a selection of remotes you can use

It’s given in my osmc application

Ive used the Samsung remotes alternatively I’ve used skyQBluetooth remotes also SkyGlass remotes

You have to play about with remote button config on later two though

Hope this helps

Where can I find this application? I could not find it on the OSMC app store.

I’ve been really happy with my Sofabaton X1S. I have two and one of the cheaper Sofabaton U2 remotes.

I think he was referring to the remote section of the My OSMC add-on where you can choose different profiles to allow different types of remotes to work with the built-in IR reciever.

As for the OSMC remote you could contact support@osmc.tv and inquire about an extra RF receiver. This plugged in through a short USB extension cable should give exceptional range without any of long-press confusion.

You can make most any universal IR remotes work with the built in receiver though it will be much slower than the OSMC RF remote, and there will be no long-press support. If you add a FLIRC USB external receiver it will be a bit faster than the built-in IR but also give long-press support. There is some learning and keymapping that is involved with that route.

If you can find a bluetooth remote control you like this can be paired and will interact with Kodi the same way a keyboard does. This should be similar in speed to the OSMC RF remote.

Most media remotes that come with their own dongle should work but the low cost ones are likely to be a bit problematic getting programmed and will not be an upgrade to the OSMC remote.

Note that the OSMC remote has been heavily tweaked with a special Kodi keymap so it provides as optimal of a button layout as a low button remote possibly can. If you switch to another remote and want a similar type of experience you will have to spend some time tweaking your remote programming and Kodi keymaps to get to the same place. I don’t say this to discourage you, but merely to inform you that with third party remotes they is almost always some work involved to get a really good experience.

It’s also very difficult to find remotes, especially Bluetooth ones, that have dedicated PLAY and STOP buttons like the OSMC remote does.

Are cell phone remote apps an option for you? I use Yatse from time to time on my cell phone and my tablet. Sometimes I just browse my library with that remote app, find what I want, and tell it to play and my TV and AVR just wake up from stand-by, which is nice.

If I already have my Vero V up on my TV and I’m just navigating from there then I do prefer to use the original remote.

I use this myself.

I don’t think an external receiver would not improve the situation much. Vero is in a line of sight 2 meters away. It just does not receive button presses in certain situations if I’m holding the remote such that my body blocks the signal path.

I think the long press issue is due to the remote itself, not the wireless connection. I think I had the same issue with Vero 4K+, but I’m not certain anymore as I have been using V for over a year now.

I am looking for a remote with bluetooth or a separate dongle. IR remotes are out of question. I did realize that using another remote would likely need some tweaking to get working properly. The purpose of this thread was to find some alternate remotes that have been found working with minimal tweaking or with some ready-made configuration files.

I did consider using a phone as remote, but I really prefer a dedicated remote with physical buttons.

It did when I did extensive testing of such, including when used with a short extension cable such that the receiver is placed with a little bit of distance from devices that had 2.4ghz signals (ie wifi and USB 3).

Tested that as well. Moving the V or external receiver just six inches with my leg between the remote and receiver could be the difference between missing every other button press and working 99% of the time in one particular (RF noisy) area of my house.

The remote sends out continuous signals when a button is held down and those get interpreted as a long press. When the signal gets weak or interrupted you can get a break in that continuous signal which can do things like think you short pressed instead of long pressed.

I would look at either a new old stock Logitech Harmony with BT capabilities (exceptional remotes that they unfortunately stopped making) or Sofabaton which are basically trying to fill the void Harmony left.

Interesting. I did try turning off the 2.4GHz radio off on my router and I don’t use USB3 for anything. But if moving the receiver away from Vero V itself helps, I could try that.

Thank you for the information and suggestions.

FWIW you can also pair two osmc remotes to the same device. I have done that myself on my Vero V.

What’s your purchase date?

Remote performance was improved some time ago. Some older orders will benefit from an external receiver

I bought it in December 2024. I read some discussions about this a long ago when I initially noticed the issue and I understood that I had an improved receiver.

Yes, December 2024 would indeed have remote issues ironed out.
