I have the hdmi’s going to a hdmi switch and then an optical cable takes it to my amp. My amp shows up DTS fine but on some AAC audio, normally 5.1 you cannot hear voices.
I have enabled passthrough in OSMC settings and the HDMI output was 5.1 when I couldnt hear voices, when I switched that option to 2.0 it worked. i didn’t think this would matter as I have enabled passthrough but it appears it does.
Shall I leave the HDMI setting as 2.0? Just want to make sure I am not losing out on anything sound wise.
Hi,
I confirm, I have also some time voice problem from source 5.1 or 2.0. I tried enable /disable passthrough, boost central channel, upmix 2.0, sometime is better but not always.
A fix will be usefull.

If audio passes through optical/spdif/toslink then “number of channels” must always be 2.0.
(you will still get 5.1 channel output with AC3 and DTS formats).
Thanks for your help. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing out on anything. So using passthrough and setting output to 2.0 will still send all the necessary channels over to my amp for the best performance?
You know a lot more about this than me but the chart above states for AVR HDMI set the channels to 5.1, I guess I have misread this as I have all the hdmi’s going to a switch and then optical going from the switch to my amp.
Again, thanks for your help.
Note: Number of channels is not necessarily equal to number of speakers.
It is for multichannel PCM output to HDMI, but optical/toslink/spdif doesn’t support multichannel PCM.
5.1 passthrough formats (AC3 and DTS) are carried using 2 channels (it’s a compressed format that is designed to fit into a stereo stream).
Really helpful indeed, really appreciate that. Thanks for your help.
I today purchased a Yamaha amp but strangely the DTS HD options in OSMC have gone? Really weird. I wiped osmc clean and started again but still not there. Has it been removed?
HD audio (7.1 channel) passthrough is not supported on Pi (or on most platforms).
If you disable passthrough you can have Pi decode DTS-HD or TrueHD as 7.1 channel and output as 7.1 channel PCM.
Pi1 can’t handle this, but Pi2 should be okay.
Thanks again. Most of the files are DTS or DD so should be ok as it is. Great help, much appreciated.
Hi guys, am i right in saying that having a video file with a 7.1 audio track, i won’t be able to passthrough the audio via optical to my 6.1 dts/dolby digital amp?
I have a few of these files recently and sound tries to play through my original apple tv via optical to my amp but it starts and stops as kodi tries to passthrough the audio and can’t i assume.
is there no way koi can downsample 7.1 to 5.1 like it can 5.1 to stereo?
