Black Panther UHD remux stuttering

I saw several stuttering (frame glitching) during viewing Black Panther UHD remux (not a fantastic movie by the way ;)). No buffer issues; auto refresh rate = on; CPU seems to be well below 40% on each core.

I have the latest and greatest update for the Vero 4K; but still some issues regarding motion glitches.

Hi,

To get a better understanding of the problem you are experiencing we need more information from you. The best way to get this information is for you to upload logs that demonstrate your problem. You can learn more about how to submit a useful support request here.

So, in summary:

  • activate the logging
  • reboot the OSMC device
  • reproduce the issue
  • upload the log set either using the Log Uploader method within the My OSMC menu in the GUI or the ssh method invoking command grab-logs -A
  • publish the provided URL from the log set upload, here

Thanks for your understanding. We hope that we can help you get up and running again shortly.

Thanks Tom.

I activated logging; rebooted the Vero 4K, and start playing Black Panther UHD until I saw a frame-skipping/stutter.

Any suggestions?

Can you PM me a link so I can test? A torrent magnet is OK

I see that kodi also indicates skipping a frame (PlayerDebug); happens in the intro after starting with 6 skipped frames and one dropped (initally)… then it runs for a minute and one more frame is skipped.

You only have to watch the intro of the movie to see this.

No frameskipping when watching the same file over the same network from my iMac Pro (bootcamp Windows 10)

Tested this myself on my Vero 4K. I run it via a Plex Media Server on a 2014 Mac mini.

I note between 1 dropped and 2 skipped frames and 1 dropped and 5 skipped frames on the UHD Black Panther right when the movie starts (before I even see a picture). I usually see similar on every movie depending on how it’s cached etc etc. Also, bringing up the debug menu usually introduces at least 1 of those frame drops. So I ignore that data.

I watched the intro 3 or 4 times (up till the part where the kids are playing basketball at night) - around 2 minutes in. 3 out of those 4 times I saw no additional frame skips. However, on one of those runs I noted a single frame skip, perhaps around 40 seconds in. Was slightly odd, but not repeatable, it seems.

I’m now leaving the movie running to see if any other frame drops/skips occur, and so far - after about 15 minutes, I have noted one skipped frame since leaving it.

So yes, I’d say there is an issue with this movie, and I’m only a little concerned that the Vero 4K and 4K UHD remuxes are just not quite there, sadly.

One or two skipped frames at the start before you see a picture is not going to cause an issue.

This is caused by the way we sync up; but shouldn’t be visible.

We’ve had problems with Terminator 2, Serenity, John Wick 2, and we’ve fixed them, so I am sure we can work out what’s going on here. As more content comes out in UHD format, we’ll run in to more corner cases, but we will look in to these issues and fix them.

Sam

Is there a specific part where I will see frame skips particularly, aside from intro?

Well, you have to add the Atmos drop-out issues that are in the Disney UHD movies (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, - and at least another one - Maze Runner, I believe).

In THIS particular case, I’m not able to repeat the issue consistently, which is of course - mega annoying. As you can see, I dropped 1 and skipped 2 right at the start of this test run (no issue with this - as you said - nothing on screen), and now nearly half an hour in - no further skipped/dropped frames.

Repeatable issues are way easier to solve, sigh.

FYI, I didn’t mean to come across as “bashing” the Vero 4K. I love it. I don’t doubt these sorts of issues will get addressed, too. This is why I fully support your efforts, Sam, and which is why I’ve recommended the Vero 4K to many friends, just about all of whom have bought at least one (check your orders - Omar P bought one over in North Carolina, Erez G over in London etc - all in the last few days. I’m quite convincing when it comes to technology + friends!).

Anyway, I love to try and help fix things - especially products I believe in, which is why I joined this thread. If I can, I will. So don’t hesitate to reach out and ask me to test a build or fix etc.

We’re working on that. The Atmos drop outs have only been reported quite recently, so it will take a bit of time.

But as you say, they can be reproduced, at the same points in time. That makes it easier for us to fix and easier for you to confirm as fixed.

Cheers

Sam
