Blacklisted / Blocked Add-ons

Hi,

I understand some add-ons and repo’s have been deemed inappropriate due to legal complications. Some add-ons may be used to stream copyrighted content.

However in the EU, it appears streaming of copyrighted content is not illegal.

European Union[edit]

In Europe, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has ruled that it is legal to look at content (copyrighted or otherwise) online.[2][3] The ruling relates to the British Meltwater case settled on 5 June 2014.[4]

The judgement of the court states that: “Article 5 of Directive 2001/29/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 22 May 2001 on the harmonisation of certain aspects of copyright and related rights in the information society must be interpreted as meaning that the copies on the user’s computer screen and the copies in the internet ‘cache’ of that computer’s hard disk, made by an end-user in the course of viewing a website, satisfy the conditions that those copies must be temporary, that they must be transient or incidental in nature and that they must constitute an integral and essential part of a technological process, as well as the conditions laid down in Article 5(5) of that directive, and that they may therefore be made without the authorisation of the copyright holders.”

Is this the case or am I missing something?

There are also some addons that do really invasive things to Kodi. Use those at your own risk.

Ah right ok, good to know thank you.

Is there any way to prevent this other than not using them? I can’t image people not using them just because I told them not too. Is there a way of checking if a system like this has been compromised? Like some system file comparison check or outbound/inbound requests etc…

I suppose an Untangle server or similar would help a lot, or would it make no difference?

This title of this thread is misleading.

OSMC doesn’t block or blacklist any addons. It will however warn you if you try to install certain addons that are known to sometimes cause problems, but it will let you install them anyway. Some of these addons do make invasive changes to your Kodi configuration or system that can cause it to be unstable or otherwise not work correctly.

As Karnage says, use such addon’s at your own risk - the warnings are there to alert people of potential problems that they may cause, not to make judgements on the use of such addons.

Sorry, I meant Banned, not Blocked

I got the general idea from the Kodi wiki

I was hoping to find out more information about it other than the obvious?
