Thanks for the lib download tip. That allows blu ray folders to start playing but they seem to pause every 10 seconds or so, for 5-6 seconds, then play for a further 10 etc. This worked OK in RaspBMC on the same Pi. Is anyone able to play blu-ray folder structures (or ISOs I guess) successfully?

More information needed. Are you playing across a network or from local storage ? If across a network what kind of network protocol (SMB, NFS etc) and what kind of connection ? (Ethernet, Wifi etc)
What codec does the video use ? Press O to bring up codec info to see. Some blurays are encoded using H.264, some with VC1 - if it’s VC1 you’ll also need the VC1 codec license installed.

Blurays and its structure in general can be played, but it depends on used codecs. With some codecs the bluray starts playing but after some time it hangs. For example: 
This bluray hangs every 5 seconds while MPG2 and VU codec enabled correctly …
