Brand new Vero V showing only black screen

Hi all,

I have received my Vero V this week and tried to configure it yesterday and this morning but there seems to be something wrong with the device in its current state. It only shows a black screen, nothing else. By “black screen”, I mean the external display device detects a signal but shows nothing.

I have tested to connects the Vero V to two different external screens, always with the same AC adapter :

  • My external Iiyama PC display : with the bundled HDMI cable then with the one other HDMI cable I use daily on this screen
  • My TV : with the bundled HDMI cable then with the other HDMI cable I use daily with my venerable Vero 4K

The behavior in all cases is always the same : nothing happens, nothing is written to the screen, just a black screen. I plugged a known-working wired keyboard to see if hitting keys would revive it somehow, without success. Then I unplugged every other HDMI/DisplayPort from the screens, except the one connected to the Vero V, without success.

This morning I connected the RJ45 port to my network to see if I could SSH to the Vero V and troubleshoot somehow. But the Vero V does no even get an IP address. I have no doubt about my network stack as it (the cable and network port it is connected to) is used by a computer that only connect to the network this way and it gets an IP address properly. That indicates that’s more than just a display output problem with my Vero V and that the OS probably does not even reach a state where the network is operating properly.

What I did not test :

  • Plug the AC adapter of my Vero 4K. It seems to be the same connector and same Votage/Amperage/Wattage characteristics but I’d rather have some approval, just in case
  • Reinstall the system. I saw in a thread that might be possible to do so with an SD Card and I found the official documentation that explains how to do it. I can do that if need be but I’d rather probe the community here if there is a more trivial way to fix this issue

Does anyone ever faced this problem ? Is there a way to fix it or should I reinstall the OS ?

Have a nice Sunday !

Vladimir

So you never got any picture out of it?
What is the LED doing when you plug in the power supply?

Yes, there never was anything else than a black screen.

When powered on, the LED is static blue, no blinking, at any time.

Hi Vladimir,

Sorry to hear you’re having an issue here.

You can definitely try the 4K/4K+ PSU with Vero V.

You can reinstall OSMC with a USB stick or SD card but I’d be surprised if that’s the issue

Some questions:

When you apply power to the device, do you see a blue LED light up on the device at all?
Does it disappear and if so, does it happen after a couple of seconds?
Is there any light from the red optical port on the back of the device?

Cheers

Sam

Hi Sam,

Tried the 4K PSU with Vero V. It did not change the behavior unfortunately. I’ll try to reinstall OSMC by Sunday and will report here.

Regarding your questions : there is a blue LED that lights up at the front of the device. It never disappear as long as power is plugged. There is no blinking whatsoever.

Regarding the red optical port, I managed to push it open while the device was powered on. Indeed, there is a red light.

Hi Vladimir,

Thank you for getting back to me.

That’s not a good sign. This means Vero V is not booting.

I have a couple of other ideas.
If you have a USB-A/USB-A cable you could plug in to a PC then that would also help.

Otherwise, don’t worry, we’ll simply swap it over.

To be honest, if there is still a chance to recover the device, I’d rather spend 1-2 hour trying to fix it and learn a few things in the process than sending it back right away

Is there any documentation that explains how to troubleshoot this way ? Does it necessarily have to be a USB-A/USB-A cable ? I connected a USB-A/USB-C data cable but a “lsusb” from my computer shows nothing. “dmesg” seems to indicate that there is no USB negotiation happening. And there is no ttyUSB* device appearing in my computer’s /dev directory. I tried that with each USB ports on the Vero V. Each time from a cold boot of the Vero V.

I tried the reinstall route, without success : wrote the last Vero V disk image to a USB stick with dd_rescue (the AppImage was not working apparently because it was expecting X11 but my computer runs under Wayland), plugged it to the Vero V and powered it on. As you suspected it did not help, there was still a plain black screen.

What os are you running, did you get any errors. The appimage should work. Sorry that doesn’t help your issue, its just I’m the current developer for the linux installer/appimage.

Regards Tom.

Hi

That’s fair, and I wouldn’t mind helping you through this.

That’s what I was going to ask you to do. The only thing I was going to say is that USB2.0 is the only port that would show up (USB3 won’t); but you tried both.

There’s a way of opening the device and forcing it in to a low level format mode, but it’s a new device and it should be working. You have a warranty and this isn’t the way to go.

So email me at support@osmc.tv and I’ll pick this up early next week. You’ve done enough.

My computer runs OpenSUSE Tumbleweed with Hyprland as desktop environment. That’s probably an exotic configuration compared to the OSMC user base. Don’t hesitate to ask me more info if you want to troubleshoot it further !

Here are the logs :

I will do that. Thank you Sam !

Brill, I’ll probably get back to you on this Tuesday
