Just wanted to quickly update for anyone that stumbles on this thread. Reformatted the drive to ext4, and all buffering issues instantly resolved! I also made the swap to an SSD drive, and everything is now operating instantly, with full gigabit speeds achieved!

Yep. SSD is definitely a bliss.
I am just waiting for 4TB SSD’s to become affordable to replace my 6year old spinning HDD’s… as these will probably soon start to fail.
