I won’t lie. I didn’t know about this limitation either and only read it after Googling the symptoms.
SFTP should give you access to the whole root filesystem; particularly with sudo
FTP won’t. From the top of my head we only expose /home/osmc via FTP and wouldn’t expose /media.

Surely reformat to ext4 would be the best solution, I used a very similar set-up and ext4 gave an data transfer increase from 60MB,/sec to 100MB/sec
Depends if the user wants to use it on other devices.
ext4 will give the best throughput but speeds of 100MB/s are not needed for 4K UHD playback.
Reformatted to NTFS and i can now transfer larger sized files from my desktop to my networked HDD.
