Can't tune into "Live TV" using MythTVbackend

Hello,

A while ago, I stopped being able to open TV shows from the guide. I get the extremely frustrating “CHANNEL UNAVAILABLE” screen. I had other problems, as well, so last week I decided to build a new backend from scratch. Not the most fun I’ve ever had, but it is “done”. Now, on the new backend, I’m getting the same message.

NOTE: Recordings work, so if you just click on the program you want to watch and tell it to record it, then go into the recordings and play it while it is recording, it works (as a workaround). I don’t want to live like that though (and neither does my family)!

NOTE: the “Channel Unavailable” message pops up immediately - doesn’t seem take any time to try to tune in at all - instead seems to be tripping on something else.

So, I enabled more logging in the PVR settings, turned on logging and tried to tune into a channel. I got a bunch of stuff that looks pertinent, but I can’t decipher it and, as seems to be common for me, Google doesn’t seem to be much help.

I will note that I set this in my “advancedsettings.xml” a long time ago and I don’t know why - maybe it is related:

<pvr>
<minvideocachelevel>30</minvideocachelevel>
<minaudiocachelevel>30</minaudiocachelevel>
</pvr>

The errors I am getting look like this:

Any idea what the heck is going on?

Thanks!!

Have you checked the MythTV setup? That’s where the error seems to be coming from.

You should probably check with the MythTV forums for help.

I don’t disagree with you on that, but the fact that on 2 different backends, this one just created and as stock as it can be, I’m getting the same result - I feel like I’m doing something wrong in Kodi. Especially since recordings work just fine.

I would use another MythTV client (other tan KODI) to test that “theory” but I don’t really know what to start and the LOE involved…

That said, I’m trying to work backwards from the source of the issue. At this point, I know that Kodi won’t load Live TV and shows errors. I’m hoping those errors can provide me some idea of where to look next, which is why I’m here. Sure, it is most likely some settings mismatch between the frontend and the backend, but where do I start to look? (that is why I’m here asking).

I will go to the MythTV forums next, and the Kodi forums if I must, too, but wanted to start here as this community seems pretty tech savvy and focused, and for all I know this could be just isolated to OSMC.

Thanks for your help in directing me, though.

That’s true but the majority here uses tvheadend as backend instead of MythTV.

Where is the ‘backend’ running? On OSMC or elsewhere?

On a Ubuntu Server VM on the network.

So OSMC really has nothing to do with your problem. The MythTV forums would be your best bet.

But I wonder how well it will run in a VM. That may be your problem.

Man - I have been debating trying something new (TVHeadend, or even NextPVR) but in searching for comparisons, it seems like Myth is more mature in commercial skipping and some other features, lots of information is outdated, though. I would be willing to switch if TVHeadend is much better. MythTV just, despite its bugs and troubles here and there, seems to have everything that I need and I’m just not sure I wouldn’t miss something if I made a switch. In other words, it’s interesting to hear you say that…

Sure MythTV is the more DVR complete product

I ran into this as well … the fix in my case was to run mythtv-setup on the backend and change the backend host from to e.g. 192.168.0.17.

The key was this comment from the plugin author, Inability to watch live TV

Not ideal but it works.
