Change from Raspberry Pi 2 model B to Raspberry pi 3

Hey Guys,

At the moment im running the latest version of OSMC on my Raspberry Pi 2 1GB Model B.
I’m planning on buying the new Raspberry Pi 3.

I wonder if its possible to just remove the sdcard with the installation of OSMC from my old Rpi 2 and put into my new Rapberry pi 3? Will it work or do I need to make a new installation?

It will work, jist remove any overclock. You will need new codec licenses for the Pi3, they are married to the board.

New codec? How do i fix that?

You purchase the licenses here Raspberry Pi Store - Raspberry Pi

To me, it reads like he doesn’t know about the codecs because he never needed to purchase them.

@mrjackeb If you never bought/installed the codecs for the RPi2 you probably don’t need them (everything that you want to play is working?), then you don’t need to do anything else other than remove the overclock settings.

Thats right, I’ve never purchased any codecs. Playing mkv files for the most time, and thats not a problem.
What kind of trouble are you guys having without the codecs?

No troubles at all. The codecs are only needed if you want hardware decoding on the GPU of certain stream types. VC-1 (some WMV video and I think blu-ray), and Mpeg2 (old one which is used by DVDs = big, slow, and ugly :))
