Cleanly remove Kodi 16 and install latest Kodi 17

As title is there a clean way to remove Kodi 16 and install the latest Kodi 17 and if so then what’s the best way to keep Kodi 17 up to date manually?

Will the usual sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade keep Kodi up to date when you guys update it your end?
