Thanks for that. I may go down that avenue as a last resort - but I was thinking - is it possible for me to do this:
-Connect the Vero 4k to the TV directly by HDMI for video
-Connect the Vero4k to the Sony 5.1 via optical for audio
?

Of course you can. But you’ll just get the non-HD audio formats supported by S/PDIF. The rest will be sent as the lossy core or transcoded to AC3 5.1.
Thank you again. I will try this first. Can you advise what settings I should have on the Vero4k to make this work? i.e. - what options in audio output and which of the formats i should have ticked? thanks again for your time.
You should set them to the following:
Audio device: PCM
Number of channels: 2.0 (S/PDIF only supports 2 channel LPCM)
Output configuration: Best match
Passthrough: enabled
DTS/AC3 passthrough: enabled
DTS-HD/TrueHD/E-AC3 passthrough: disabled
AC3 transcoding: enabled
And keep in mind to disable “sync playback to display” under settings/player/videos for passthrough to work.
If you want your TV’s refresh rate to be adjusting according to the source’s frame rate, also set "Adjust display refresh rate” to Always or to On start/stop under settings/player/videos.
