Is there anyway of bring up the time display whilst playing a video? If I pause the video and go to home screen the video title blocks the time display.

You didn’t state what skin your using. You would need to take this up with the maintainer of whichever your using. Both Estuary and the OSMC skin shows the time on the home screen when a background video is paused (the OSMC skin just shows it slightly different as a current time/time when video will finish).
