Do u have to chancge the .gz file to a tar?

do u have to change the .gz file to a .tar file to write to a usb for the hdd drive ?

i did have to with oe, which is why i ask?

if so what are the steps to write it to the usb? ive done it in the past but forget how to as im not great at this…

this is how id do it for the oe, but not sure if the osmc is the same way?

diskutil list | grep -v disk0 | tail +2

diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk7

gunzip -c Open (file name etc…).img.gz | sudo dd of=/dev/rdisk7 bs=1m

You don’t need to perform any command line steps for hard disk installation

Go to Download - OSMC and use one of the Windows, OS X or Linux installers

Thanks sam! But honestly im not sure how to apply that to appletv??? If i use a mac i guess id download the mac one? And then how would i then install it to the appletv?

Sorry for being a newbee about this, but ive never done an install like this…

Download it and follow the on-screen instructions. Then ask questions about what you’re not sure on.

Oh awesome thanks sam! Will give er a go when i get my recent apletv in!

ok the only issue i see is that it wont let u choose where ti install it, i then press forward, while its greyed out on the sd card, and then it shows me my usb drive, which is fine, but what if i wanted to install on an internal harddrive? i dont have the option…

also it is now stuck i guess at unmountiing/dev/rdisk5/ saying it could take a few seconds and it has not moved from there…

im trying to use the hdd install btw…

does it take a while for the osmc to actually install on the usb? because ive now tried 2 usb devices to which both are stuck at unmounting/dev/rdisk5…

this is why ive always input everything into terminal myself, as i can see how it is progressing…

You select either HDD or USB when selecting the OS version. The SD card etc option is greyed out because it’s irrelevant.

Would need to see a log to know why unmount is not progressing. Otherwise, download the desired image manually and dd it.

i did select hdd, and thus for the 2nd time it has now been frozen at unmounting for like 30 min…

where can i get a log on my mac?

do i need to format the usb drive first? i thought it would be unmounted, formatted and thus installed ?
