Documentation for Video Playback UI?

Hi all,

is there a manual or documentation on the functions of the OSMC remote in playback mode?

I’m using my Vero V for video files that won’t play on my FireTV/Jellyfin client. (That is my go-to client, as I find the remote and the interface a lot easier.

When using the Vero I’m always triggering functions unexpectedly, like jumping around in the movie timeline instead of navigating the UI when using the direction keys/ring on the remote. Learning-by-doing does not seem to work for me - either I doing it not often enough or I’m simply too old by now.

So - my question is: Is there a manual anywhere either for the playback mode and the remote or a manual how to customize it? I found the documentation on adding different remotes and on long-press behaviour, but neither one addresses my (rather basic) questions.

Thanks and all the best

Andreas

The “manual” I think your looking for doesn’t exist. I put in my long-press guide what I thought would be most helpful, but I was never able to formulate in my head how to put something more comprehensive together. There is quite a bit of information on customizing the layout (ie keymapping) on Kodi’s wiki and forum as I believe is touched upon in that long-press guide. Kodi maps remote functions on per window basis. For example, full screen video playback is one window, and if you bring up player controls that is a seperate window. The OSMC remote is unique in that it has been extensively keymapped to act as one would expect in all windows. To try to detail what every button does in every window would be one very long list. I suppose the hope was that it was mapped well enough that for almost everyone there shouldn’t need any more instruction for basic function that there is a need for most any other piece of A/V equipments remote.

For your particular issue, I’m sure we can figure out where things are going wrong for you if you can provide some specifics of what is happening and where, and what you would like to happen differently.

To respond directly to what you have mentioned with navigation the main point would be that what the buttons do with the video overlay showing is different than what happens during straight full screen playback. In full screen playback the direction buttons (with a regular short-press) act a bit different depending on if the file your playing has chapters or bookmarks. The left and right direction buttons always do small “skip steps” which Kodi’s wiki fully explains [HERE]. The up and down buttons with no chapters or bookmarks do large skip steps, with how large (time vs. percentage) dictated by video length. If chapters and/or bookmarks are present then the up/down navigation buttons navigate only those and they don’t do skip steps at all.

When you press the select button this brings up the video overlay at which point the direction buttons by necessity only do navigation. The play/pause and stop buttons function the same regardless of if the overlay is showing or not. Once you hit the back/return button to dismiss the overlay the direction buttons go back to functioning as video navigation controls.
