Dolby Vision Issues with Apple TV Plus 'Slow Horses'

So far I’ve had no issues with Dolby Vision playback on my Vero V to an LG CX TV.

However, I had trouble playing back the latest season of ‘Slow Horses’. The Dolby Vision logo appears but the playback is a Pink colour.

Can anybody shed any light on this ?

Hi

Is it possible for you to share a log as well as a sample of the file?

Many thanks

Sam

(Almost) the same problem for me with Slow Horses Episode 3, the Dolby Vision logo appears but the playback is blank/black.

Here’s a 30sec cropped sample (using FFMPEG) (plays fine with VLC, but not on my LG CX).

I can’t reproduce that here. Plays fine except the Apple Original message appears for only a nanosecond. What do your logs say?

Logs here -

It’s P8 (but probably not from BD) ffmpeg says:

DOVI configuration record: version: 1.0, profile: 8, level: 6, rpu flag: 1, el flag: 0, bl flag: 1, compatibility id: 1

Here is a 15 second sample:- https://drive.google.com/file/d/14Xd1ytAmJCRfVYw1c3Ia8ZqEJKI3LoV0/view?usp=drive_link

Also, logs are here:-

Sorry for the delay. Many thanks for taking a look.

Can you give access to all, or did you mean to restrict it?

Sorry, I thought grabbing the link would give access. I’ve fixed the restrictions so anyone can view.

For reference, both of these clips play fine here. Vero->Yamaha->PhilipsTV. It shouldn’t make a difference, but you have ‘use limited colour range’ OFF. You should set it to ON.

Thanks for taking a look Graham. Was there anything in the log that could explain why this is happening on my system. Given that @thechrisgregory also has an LG CX maybe it’s a TV issue.

I’ve just tried it on my LG G4 and it is garbled with lots of green all over the screen. Vero V plugged directly into the TV. Will finally be passing it through my Marantz AVR on the weekend, but for now that’s the direct result.

I have found that after playing back a video that exhibits the psycho phenomina (garbled pink/green), if you then play, briefly, another DV video that plays normally … and then, finally return to the psycho video, it will play OK.

Don’t ask me why - I don’t know.

That’s useful. So can you reliably reproduce the issue if that clip is the first one played after a reboot?

Yes, and I will double check when I get a moment.

… a few moments later … (sponge Bob)

OK, so I repeated the test, (reboot, play sample) and it happened once (psycho mode).
Played another DV video, and then back to the original video - which played properly with TV indicating DV detected.

I went on to try this 4 more times an was unable to re-create the original psycho mode problem, by reboots.

Could this be a physics/hardware/psu issue ? i.e. the Vero-V got up to temperature and decided to perform.

So not reliably repeatable (which doesn’t help).

Thanks. We suspect there are some timing issues which means it’s difficult to get repeatable results.

Sounds plausable Graham.

Just to confirm, I just watch another episode, and the psycho mode was back, quickly cleared by briefly playing another video.

I tried @thechrisgregory 's trick of playing another DV file briefly and then trying the problem DV file again and lo and behold it was playing fine on my setup too.

I rebooted and played the clip again and it was still working !

So I’m slightly flummoxed as well.
