External HDD Media Folder shows 12.8GB but no video files in folder@#!@

Hi guys I’m very green to all of this but I try and add media in the file settings it shows 12.8GB but no file contents?

It is formatted with ntfs any idea what I should be doing?

If you are attempting to “add source”, you won’t see any files. You are attempting to set a location, not single files. If you want to see single files, user the File Manager under Settings.

Thanks for the reply!
What is the best way to add an external hard drive and then view the videos.
Is there a step by step. I tried File Manager under settings going to root and then media and selecting it… it shows 12.8GB but no files at all. I tried updating the library and going to videos and nothing?

What drive? How is it powered? Are you certain there are files there?

It’s a 3.5" seagate 1tb using a usb 3 powered enclosure and I’ve tried plugging it in to the Pi3 using no powered usb hub or using it through a powered usb hub.

It is formatted via ntfs on windows and files copied on in windows

Sorry I know specifics help! should have mentioned them upfront! I appreciate your replies!

Plug it back into the windows machine and confirm that the files still exist. Then MAKE SURE that you “safely remove” from windows before moving it back to the pi and rebooting.

Uploading…

Please see attached. I’ve tried without the powered usb hub… with the hub…
I’ve verified files exist on windows when plugged back in and then safely removed and tried plugging back in?

What is the label? Your drive should appear by its label in the media folder. The path should be /media/drivelabelname.

In your screenshot, it seems the media folder does not have any mounted drives. So perhaps automounting failed at least partly, because of an issue. You should provide logs that will show the mounting failure.

Do I need to enable automounting?

There is an issue with the drive, the enclosure, or the cable. Possibly still related to power even. Even the hub may not provide enough power to support it.

Interesting… thank you for your sleuthing… I shall try an ssd in the same case and see if it works

Strange SSD in the same case doesn’t work nor does 2.5"… it’s a brand new powered usb 3 case that works fine in the pc…

Maybe =I’ll try a 2.5" WD passport or something similar…

anyone got any suggestions of known working external disks?
