External ntfs hdd freeze ( from transmission ? ) - fixed

Hei

New owner of a Vero V. Using Transmission as my torrent client and I am trying to see if it is causing my hdd - 4 Tb WD My Passport - to freeze or some other issues could be the reason.

Very often ( 4-5 times / day ) Transmission client will stop responding. From the CLI i try to sudo stop / start / restart the service with no result - it is still unreachable. For awhile I thought it was a system issue so i would hard reboot Vero ( soft reboot would not change anything ). Now i discovered that simply unplugging the hdd and plugging it back in fixes the issue. Again, mounting / unmounting the hdd from the command line changes nothing.

Did not try (yet) to keep it running without Transmission in the background to see if that is the only reason why this is happening…

A little bit frustrated i have to keep doing this. I checked the hdd under win using chkdsk and found no errors. Any idea or suggestion would be highly regarded.

Thanks

How is the drive powered?

NTFS uses FUSE on Linux which means you’ll get quite poor write performance. A filesystem like exfat might be a better bet and will still work on PC.

Hei Sam

Thanks for your reply.

The drive is powered solely through USB connection via Vero.
If exfat might solve the solution I can save the data already present, format the drive and re-copy the data. That should work, no?

Check the specs of the hard drive. The USB3 port can output 0.9A. If the drive needs more power, it must be externally powered.

Thanks Sam

I will try to plug it in through a USB active HUB to see if that makes a difference. Although, the hdd is built for usb 3.2 and only has a cable connection, so I doubt the current flow is the problem.

Will try to change the filesystem also. I will update if I have a solution.

The drive might list its power requirements somewhere on the back. Otherwise if you give us the model number we can check it online.

couldn’t find it on the back nor in the manual ( https://studio.westerndigital.com/content/dam/doc-library/en_us/assets/public/wd/product/external-storage/my_passport/my-passport/user-manual-my-passport.pdf )

i might try with an active usb hub to see how it goes, and i’ll try to change transmission for another client to see if there are any compatibility issues there

Change one thing at a time

will do controlled studies, no worries

i’ll update if i find anything

so connecting the HDD though an active usb hub did the trick. I didn;t have a problem for some days now - usually it would happen that i had to remount the hdd multiple times a day

still wondering why the current flow was the problem, as the hdd is constructed to run on a usb 3.x connection so the amps that verou outputs should be enough.

i am suspecting that it might have something to do with it going into standby mode and not being able to come out of it ( i think these freezes would happen when the hdd was not in use ) - but i cannot confirm that

Check the drive specification (power requirements).
