Several years ago I had set up OSMC in my Raspberry Pi 4 and everything worked pretty much perfectly. I recently decided to set the same thing up again, using the same Raspberry Pi.
I’m using the official Raspberry Pi 4 power supply, a brand new 128 GB Micro SD card, and the same old external hard drive I used in the past to store my media.
I installed OSMC onto the SD card using Raspberry Pi imager, went through the initial setup and pointed the libraries to the folders on my drive. It scrapes successfully, and will play one file no problem. When the file stops and I chose a different file, or try to resume the file, the entire OSMC install seems to break. It just comes up with an error saying failed to open file. Several reboots later it may or may not start working again, but the entire interface freezes or runs very very slowly.
I reinstalled OSMC, and the same song and dance happened. As it stands now, I’m trying to navigate through my library, and each key press takes 20 seconds or more to respond. I’m getting very fed up with it. This was supposed to be an easy project, but now it’s turning into a massive frustration. Is anyone else running into these issues, or is there someone who may be able to help me resolve this?
To get a better understanding of the problem you are experiencing we need more information from you. The best way to get this information is for you to upload logs that demonstrate your problem. You can learn more about how to submit a useful support request here.
Depending on the used skin you have to set the settings-level to standard or higher, in summary:
-
enable debug logging at settings->system->logging
-
reboot the OSMC device twice(!)
-
reproduce the issue
-
upload the log set (all configs and logs!) either using the Log Uploader
method within the My OSMC menu in the GUI or the ssh
method invoking command grab-logs -A
-
publish the provided URL from the log set upload, here
Thanks for your understanding. We hope that we can help you get up and running again shortly.

Hi! Thank you for the quick reply. I don’t want to jinx it, but after enabling logging and rebooting twice, the issue seems to have gone away, although the start from the beginning option seems to have gone away when I select a movie. I’ll keep playing around with it tonight and tomorrow and will report back if anything happens again.
I’d suggest to run h2testw on that new SD card you purchased. There are lots of fakes and plenty of junk in that market. As it will require overwriting the SD to test if you don’t want to abandon your install you can image the SD before running the test and restore it from that image once your done.
