Freezing, background and video issues

Hi there,

I’m running OSMC on a raspberry pi B2 model (running on the latest OSMC build), but since a couple of days I’m experiencing some problems:

  • OSMC freezes and does not respond to the remote control (this also happend when I tried to upload the log);
  • At times the background images are gone;
  • OSMC can not play videos anymore (sometimes the video doesn’t start, or I only get the sound)

These issues all started after the latest small OSMC-update.
There’s nothing attached to the pi besides the ethernet cable, power plug, and HDMI cable.

I’ll try to upload the diagnostics log as soon as possible…

Thanks!

Thijs

Most problems relate to

  • Power supply (not powerful/stable and also can get faulty)
  • SD Card corruption (or bad SD Card adapter)

Both cases can give strange behaviour

Had the same problem. Just go back to 4.3.3-3:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall rbp2-image-4.3.3-3-osmc

Hi Morte,

Thanks for your quick response!
I was already afraid these problems would be caused by broken hardware. The pi is powered by the original power plug (not through a USB cable) and the micro SD card is a 32GB Samsung evo.

How can I check whether the power plug is unstable or the micro SD card is currupted?

Check this to check the SD Card

If that won’t fix problems it is still not 100% sure your card is healthy or the installation is healthy,
Having a different SD Card and doing a clean install on it will give also hints if all works or not (worked for me in the past, all worked nicely again, problem was the SD even fsck couldn’t solve).

Original power adapter on the Pi B I replaced once, got faulty.
Original power adapter on the Pi 2 I replaced once (at least you get a rainbow rectangle on the tv to tell you you have power issues with a Pi2)
p.s. faulty power adapter can also cause corruption including pulling the power on a hang

And you try to “roll back”, which could indicate also a power issue, I read somewhere on the forum with one of the latest updates demands some more power.

@Echo: I tried your solution and got the following message:

Hmm. There is a symbolic link /lib/modules/4.3.3-3-osmc/build
However, I can not read it: No such file or directory
Therefore, I am deleting /lib/modules/4.3.3-3-osmc/build

Hmm. The package shipped with a symbolic link /lib/modules/4.3.3-3-osmc/source
However, I can not read the target: No such file or directory
Therefore, I am deleting /lib/modules/4.3.3-3-osmc/source

@Morte: I tried to edit the cmdline.txt but I get the error: permission denied…

sudo nano …

@Morte: Sorry, I’m quite new to this, but I finally managed to edit cmdline.txt. However, nothing changed…

http://paste.osmc.io/losukibuwe or

http://paste.osmc.io/irejacobar

You did reboot after edit I hope

The links I only get a blank page.
I am not a log reader, but do need logs for the techs to follow up on this

I rebooted multiple times. forcefsck is running after reboot, no rainbow rectangle.

The diagnostic log was to big to upload. I hope this works: Kodi | PDF

just an fyi the kodi.log doesnt do shit here its the other logs that more useful

sudo grab-logs -p -v -a -o -J -I

@Toast: Thanks for this command! Got the following log:

http://paste.osmc.io/aqosizoqug

====================== Pi config =================== Ul2H1CLu gpu_mem_1024=64 over_voltage=0 sdtv_mode=2 force_turbo=0 disable_splash=1 core_freq=450 initial_turbo=0 start_x=1 over_voltage_sdram=0 disable_overscan=1 sdtv_aspect=3 arm_freq=900 sdram_freq=450 gpu_mem_256=64 gpu_mem_512=64
No pi will ever play video with gpu_mem set so low! Default on a Pi2 should be gpu_mem_1024=256
