So its very early days but it seems that there is a fairly good chance retroplayer will appear natively in kodi in a future release. I can see from the retrosmc thread that retrosmc seems to be making incredible progress but it is currently not supported on the Vero.
If retroplayer does end up being a native feature in kodi, will there be an effort made for future Veros to support this feature in some way?
It will be a Kodi feature so yes, available on all platforms.
Our long term plan for RetroGaming is to serve it via Kodi.
Kodi v18 builds will be available soon with retrogaming functionality for Raspberry Pi.
I understand that @gmc who is producing these builds also wants some new hardware to build on and for, so I suspect there will be v18 builds of OSMC for Vero in the near future. This means users will not need to wait for the final version of Kodi v18 to enjoy retrogaming capabilities on Vero.
