GoPro Hero 11 video sliced

Vero V

Is there any way to correctly playback GoPro 11 footage without converting everything? Footage seems to play fine but is sliced vertically and out of order.

Video shows as (HEVC, 5312x2988, 59822963 bps)

Edit: spelling

I think we had a report of this before.
The resolution is already out of spec for the hardware decoder, but a sample would still be interesting.

Could you share a file with us?

Sam

Sure.

I have a handful of 8k clips and they play similar to yours, or worse.

Indeed, it’s worth mentioning that while 8K HEVC/VP9 was added to SM1 (S905X3) and later hardware, it was considered to be experimental and video output is still capped at 4K75p on the HDMI PHY side.

Theoretically there could be some improvements in the future with the new kernel but the SoC vendor still do not officially specify 8K decode as supported

Thanks Sam.

Any easy batch coversion suggestions from anyone out there?

There are a lot of tools to convert, but you will lose quality.
Going forward, I am sure the GoPro has an option to record at a lower resolution.

I’m always using handbrake for such conversions. This is not super easy but with following information, it’s not a rocket science:

  1. put all your 5K mp4 video clips you want to convert into a new folder (no subdirectories)
  2. install the latest/greatest handbrake version; I’m always using the current nightly version at GitHub - HandBrake/HandBrake-snapshots: Development Snapshot builds of HandBrake.
  3. Start hdanbrake and select your folder with the clips
  4. select the preset “Super HQ 2160p60 4k HEVC Surround”
  5. Select quality to 19, constant framerate + same as source. The encoder preset determines the quality; be warned that you need a lot of CPU power for slow and slower/veryslow can take ages dependent on your CPU model. But the results are really excellent.
  6. Select where all the new files should be placed:
  7. click on the arrow right to “Add to Queue” and select add all
  8. There should be now a number of jobs displayed, select “start encode” … and wait till done. That’s it.

Tip/question: Your provided video clip shows “only” 8-bit colour depth but using 10-bit is really a gain with 4k video! Check your GoPro settings whether 10-bit colour is available.
