H.265 decoding

Hello,

I recently encoded a few videos from BlueRay using Handbrake with the “AMD (hardware) H.265” profile. These files play fine on my Vero 4k+, but I can not scroll within them. If I try, the UI looks up and doesn’t do anything any more until I stop playback of the file.

Interestingly, if I use a Kindle FireTV Stick running Kodi v20 (same as the Vero) I can scroll through the file there.

Decoding on the Vero is set to “hardware” (the info box says “am-h265, unknown”).

What can be the reason for this behavior?

It’s hard to say without knowing the specs of the file, but it is likely an encoding issue. It would also help to know what container you have used.

This is out of spec. I am surprised that it plays at all. Perhaps the lower resolution and bitrate helps. For compatibility I would suggest targeting a lower profile. This might not necessarily be the cause, but it won’t be helping.

Interesting. I had used the factory preset “Fast 720p30” and just changed the encoder from “H.264 (x264)” to “H.265 (AMD VCE)”.

This changed “Encoder Level” from “3.1” to “Auto”.

For manual selection values up to 5.2 are available for H.264, and values up to 6.2 for H.265. I guess “auto” took the highest value available.

What value would you suggest for H.264 and H.265 respectively?

For H.264 stick with 4.1 high and 5.1 main for H.265 this should give you files that should be well supported on most any hardware you might find yourself using. Additionally you may have less issues if you use fixed frame rate instead of variable.

Our VPU officially supports:

  • H.265 HEVC MP-10@L5.1 up to 4Kx2K@60fps
  • H.264 AVC HP@L5.1 up to 4Kx2K@30fps

Anything higher is not supported.

But @darwindesign’s suggestion is what I’d aim for. I’d suggest profiles above this will have minimal yield if file size is your target.

I’m afraid this didn’t solve the problem. I recoded (from the source) again, this time with profile 5.1. I still can’t scroll within the file, nor even change an audio track without playback freezing.

That is quite odd that just changing the audio track would cause a problem. If you could reboot twice, enable debug logging, reproduce the freeze, and then upload logs posting the returned url in this thread it may provide a bit more insight into where the issue may be.

Use a constant frame rate – most HW decoders won’t touch variable.

I tried reproducing making a file with Handbrake as close to possible to your own and I can’t find any issue. I switched audio tracks, skipped chapters back and forth, used ff and rw, and skip stepped like crazy and everything worked as expected with zero freezes or crashes. The only notable change from what you have described was I used Intel accelerated encoding instead of AMD. I suppose you could try doing a software encode to rule out an issue there.

Fascinating. :slight_smile:

I created a new Handbrake profile just the way I wanted it, using “AMD VCE” hardware encoder. This set “Profile” to “Main” and “Level” to “Auto”. I manually reset this to 5.1.

→ The resultant file suffered from all the same problems - no scrolling.

Then I changed the encoder to “Intel QSV” hardware. This changed both profile/level back to “Auto”, again I selected “Main” and “5.1”.

→ This file is fine.

I can’t find significant differences in the format of the two files. The bitrate of the Intel one is lower, but that seems to be about it.

One more thing: Even if I specify the frame rate as “Constant Framerate” in Handbrake, the file report still states “variable”. It doesn’t seem to make a difference here, but I’m still wondering if some other setting is overriding the “constant” (maybe the “framerate - same as source” I keep selecting?) or if there might simply be a bug in there.

It’s likely an issue with AMD’s hardware encoder producing out of spec files.

MediaInfo will tell you the advertised specification of the file but won’t confirm whether it is conformant.

You could encode using a different profile or see if there is an update available for your graphics card.

Perhaps AMD have a support channel for this.
