Hard time with music library

Because I want a single device -the Vero4K- to be my main media hub in the living room. So its not the question to choose another app, but to get the existing to work.

Many of Kodis peculiarities -especially the music library- occured to me some time after starting to use it.
By no means “I dont like the basic design”. It just astonishs me, that so few people have the desire to customize the listing option more to their liking. If the way we work out in this thread is succesful, I surely will enjoy Kodis music player.

Nothing to do with the Vero4, or what you wan’t like box. It’s Kodi design
I think the best way is to ask directly Dave Blake in the Kodi Music Forum.
One suggestion write directly and clearly what you want to see, the best with one exemple what you see now with Kodi, and what you want to see.

You suggested using another “app”. Thats no choice for me.

Have you read this thread? I dont complain at all and for now, my “problem” seems absolutely solvable. Its fine Kodi works this way, its just remarkable.

Test started with tracks 4 to 9 completely removed of MB-tags, rest left as it is/was.

Kodi Library completely cleaned via deleting mymusic.db . Scraped without “online” and “show albumartist”.
Result in artist view: One artist named Nick Cave with two albums. One album with song 4-9 the other album with the rest.

As expected. kodi is distinguishing Hee-Haw: Nick Cave with no MBid from the one with a MBid.

Yep. Only strange thing to me: Why didnt Kodi listed two artists again but two Nick Cave albums? Shouldnt it show one album for Nick Cave (the deleted tags) and one for Birthday Party (untouched tags)?

Maybe because despite having a MBid when it goes to MB it can’t get a track-for-track match so doesn’t grab the ALBUMARTIST.

Might be. Start delete all MB-tags from my collection now. Will report back.

I see ARTISTS, ALBUMARTISTSORT, ARTISTSORT … why is all this mess included?

Because I didnt touch these songs at all (except the MB-tags). Means that all the remains from my previous sessions is still left. Are you interested in a clean/lab condition run?

I would first clean all tags from all files and then restart with a new MyMusicDB to be sure all this BRAINZ stuff is gone. From that point on you can be sure that Kodi reacts on the tag manipulation while library updates as expected.

Ah yes. Thats my approach. I have a completely deleted DB, doing my retags atm and than will rescrape in Kodi.
Edit: The Nick Cave test album was just that: A test. Not an example how I will retag.

and no special tags anymore, keep it simple as possible. … as I do.

It’s not for you. But your thread tell “hard time with music library” and that’s is wrong. And inside the OSMC forum a lot of people see the title of this thread.

Kodi has strong support for MusicBrainz tagging. It is highly recommended that users tag their music files using MusicBrainz picard.

It’s easy to work with Kodi music, with a lot of advantages

Kodi wiki Music Files & Tagging

without musicbrainz ID(s) you don’t have a lot of infos inside your skin, you don’t update your (music) informations. You DON’T use KODI advantages really .
That’s your problem, but don’t write that it’s “hard with music library”. Kodi make the life easy for users. Please tell " I don’t like, I will found another way ".
End of the Story for me

Uhm, the title implies, that the OP (me) is having a hard time with the music library. Wich means he cant get it to work as he wants it to work. By no means that means that Kodi “is bad” or “doesnt work”.

I do like Kodi. I just dont like to rely 100% on tags that another software or better: database (MusicBrainz or Picard) is using. And Im not alone with my wish not to use MB-tags. I prefer to list and cutsomize the view of my music further to my liking.
I think thats just the spirit Kodi and OSMC stand for.

Heureka! It worked. Found some tags that I seem to have olverlooked but that was predictable. I will now test how much metainformations and additional art I can get at this state.

By the way: I can happily admit, that I used the X / Y solution for some albums. Mainly when I have music from both/all of them.

A honest “thank you” to @grahamh and @JimKnopf !

This post is marked as “Solution” which I guess is not totally right. Can you check and mark the post (out of the 77) that is closest to your solution?

Done.
