HDR too dark on TV

Hi, I know this has been brought up before but I have a LG OLED B7 TV and the HDR is way too dark, especially compared to the internal LG player.

I have enable the HDR setting in Kodi but no joy, also copied over the TV settings from the internal player to the Vero 4k but again, still so very dark.

I have seen a few threads regarding a setting within Putty but I am not completely up to speed with it, so any guidance would really be appreciated.

Vero 4k has been great up until now. Thanks

I have the C7 (same screen as the B7). HDR looks great. Are you sure your black level is set correctly? Can you post your picture settings including advanced settings?

Settings for the TV or the Vero? Thanks

TV.

Can you post debug logs, please? And media_info for the file.

Those settings look good to me. Mine are very similar. I suspect the media or perhaps the soundbar at this point (if you connect through that?). What’s the source material? And is it the same issue directly connected to the TV?

The source material is a full uhd mkv at about 56gb.

I have the Vero connect in the hdmi input of the soundbar, which is a LG SJ9. Apparently it meant to pass through Dolby Vision so the Vero shouldn’t be a problem.

I will connect the Vero direct to the TV tomorrow and see if their is any difference.

Thanks

I’m definitely interested how you fare directly connected.

If I would recognize the movie I could help with the media info. I recognize Thor but can’t say of the marvel movies it is

It is Ragnarok. I can say because of the bad guy.

Nice !

Here is the mediainfo:

Let us know how you get on with that. If still a problem, please turn off HDR autoswitching, open a commandline and type

echo 10bit,limited | sudo tee /sys/class/amhdmitx/amhdmitx0/attr

Then start the movie.

My LG (although E6) is set to “isf expert (bright room)”, for me the best result so far.

Same here. I own a LG C7. I find the HDR Picture also very dark compared to other Sources.

I’d be interested to see a time stamp for a movie that is “obviously” too dark in your estimations. Then I can check on my C7, too.

I’m seeing the same thing, but in most cases it is subtle to me, with the Vero not quite hitting the same highlights as the internal player. I also have a B7 + Vero 4k, I’ve checked (and double checked and triple and…) that the settings are all the same across both inputs, and I get the same result directly connecting the Vero to my TV. The HDR autoswitching in the UI doesn’t work for me, so I still do the echo 422,12bit | sudo tee /sys/class/amhdmitx/amhdmitx0/attr (the mode my Samsung UHD player flips to for HDR) and I’ve also tried 10bit,limited.

Coco is a good example, though, as it’s a very colorful movie. Even the opening Disney and Pixar logos are noticeably different than the built in player, with the fireworks over the castle not popping on the Vero, and the Pixar logo is the wrong shade. Then 25:00 when they first come over the bridge we should see a jaw dropping display of color, but instead we get a pretty good display of color .

Terminator 2 also has a few good scenes to compare (it’s the first one I noticed). The scene at 30:30 is mid-late afternoon with a clear sky, but it looks like the sun is dim on the Vero 4k. Another scene is 1:30:20, the headlights should shine off the black highway at night, rather than just lighting it up, then the spotlights blinking through the trees should be almost distracting. Once they get into Cyberdyne the fluorescent lights are also subdued.

Both of my files are remuxed from disk. MediaInfos:

Interesting, I have Coco remuxed too so I will have a look at it too tomorrow. So far HDR seemed fine to me but being a bit underwhelmed by it so far I’m wondering if that might be due to the Vero.

Sigh.

Can now confirm this on my C7 with the Vero 4K. I guess HDR is indeed borked. Sam? Any chance we can get this looked at?

I compared Coco and indeed the intro is dim by comparison to LG’s built-in player and my Apple TV 4K. Which means the whole movie is. Which means HDR is borked on the Vero after all?

Do you have a non LG TV to test this on?
When you say HDR is borked: are you saying it doesn’t work at all? Do you see the HDR sign on your TV?

I assumed you have manually enabled 10-bit output for consistency.
