SD and HD video without HDR works fine, however when playing back HDR video the brightness is pumped up for some reason. Easy to see from the OSD colors. However, the video is not washed out and black is black.
Where to look for the culprit?

Let’s start with some logs so we can get some more details about your display
Sam
Here are a bit sanitated logs: osmc-bright.txt - Google Drive
You can still use the OSMC pastebin after editing. Just go to paste.osmc.tv, paste your log, hit Save and post the URL. It’s so much easier for us to find things than in a Google doc.
My low-grade Panasonic automatically cranks up the backlight to full when it’s showing HDR, This, and the Contrast can be adjusted independently of the SDR setting.
Thanks, here’s the log in pastebin: https://paste.osmc.tv/cihuvovudi.xml
I did not yet find anything suspicious in my TV’s (brand new TCL) settings but I’ll dig it once more, if there’s nothing suspicious in the logs.
What model TCL do you have?
TCL C765 (aka MQLED85).
In Movie mode it is impossible to get the picture to look good with OSMC+HDR10. I also have Chromecast plugged into the same AV receiver and it has no picture quality issues (though it outputs Dolby Vision).
Read this from a review, “We measured the TCL MQLED85 at just over 2,000 nits in a small 10% window, and 750 nits across the entire screen. That’s almost as much as its big brother, the C855, and twice as much as a typical OLED TV!”.
Sounds like quite the bright set you have there!
Not implying that’s the issue, just saying.
So when you watch HDR content, is the content itself too bright in your opinion or is it just the OSMC OSD that’s to bright?
You said the video isn’t washed out and the blacks are solid so I’m guessing it’s just the OSD is too bright.
And in the two pictures you shared, is the top HDR and the bottom SDR?
Sorry I may have used wrong terminology.
Yes, the tv is capable of producing high luminance (nits). However, with the brightness problem I mean that if I could take histogram it would be too much on the white side. Washed out would mean that the contrast was low but that is not the case, it’s just too… white/bright?
Yes, top one is HDR and bottom SDR. And the content is relatively as much too bright/white as the OSD is, so the problem applies to the whole screen. Wrong tone mapping / PQ curve could produce this problem I think.
Hope this clarifies
