[HELP NEEDED] Translating OSMC in to other languages

Hi @Chillbo, the Dutch translation is up to speed again :slight_smile: No more bulk-edit-efforts required.

I noticed your comments “Please leave unchanged translations empty - they’ll fall back to the source string.” But I am not sure how to achieve this? When I leave the string emtpy, it stays in an untranslated state, showing ‘action required’. My OCD wants to achieve 100% translated. What is the action you intended for these strings?

Edit: adding to this, I guess I prefer the ‘unchanged translation’-warnings over the ‘untranslated - action required’-messages. It just makes more sense to fill the translation string, although unchanged. Leaving it empty, there will always be doubt if the string was intentionally left blank or was simply forgotten.

You simply leave them empty and hit Save again after the error is shown… It won’t be perfect, sure, but nothing we can do about it from what I can see. There’s no way to basically “fake approve” empty strings (that I know of atm, will however ask around), we just have to live with not reaching 100%… But as long as we have good translations for everything, that outweighs the missing 100% label by far :wink:

I can however dismiss a warning for a translation that should be left empty, if you ping me in a comment over at WebLate. As I don’t know all the languages you help us translate to, I’ll need a hint which non-translated strings should stay empty. Have added this to the guide above. These hints are valuable to put together guidelines and basically an FAQ to work with :+1:t2:

Just out of interest, if there are strings that should not be translated, why are they in strings.po in the first place?

Because they are easily interchangeable, if needed, in all places used. And it’s a simple means of structuring the code - labels should be populated only by localizes, if not filled by infolabel e.g., and not contain plain text.

I’ve invited a number of users to the WebLate system, but it seems that some users are not getting emails. If you haven’t received anything yet, please let me know.

I dunno if you emailed me for the Italian translation (checked spam folder as well) but I received nothing.

I have recently changed my email address for this OSMC account, but now it seems I can’t login into the weblate platform and password resetting doesn’t work either. Can I have a new invitation?

You are given a specific translator-*@osmc.tv account. Did you get an email through this?

I can’t remember, but I am pretty sure that when I received the invitation link for weblate I just logged in with the same email address I was using here at the forums at that time.

That’s definitely not the case – we’re using an internal email because WebLate leaks email addresses, and this would be a severe privacy issue.

I can now see everyone has an account on our WebLate and should’ve been able to sign in. Is that correct? :slightly_smiling_face:

We’ve just changed the internal email addresses to a different domain, so you should now see something to the affect of translator-X@contribute-osmc.com in your WebLate profile. Everything should continue working as before :+1:t2:

Sorry, I still haven’t received any invite for the OSMC Weblate instance via email. Maybe I’m missing something, and there is another way to access it. Thanks for your help!

A smaller update is coming up (no firm ETA), so it might be good for everyone to check-in with their translations again… There have been some source string changes and I’ve also refined the checks as well as commented on some of your translations. :wink:

We hope that email notifications from WebLate are working now as well, so you should be kept up-to-date now, if you’ve configured your notification settings accordingly. :slightly_smiling_face:
