Summary/Context:
The application that i’m using OSMC in is that virtually all of the media is played off of a NAS using autofs or off of removable media such as a microSD card.
Current Setup:
If a user wants to play a video off of a MicroSD card they need to navigate through several menus usually Videos → files → media → their microSD cards directory
If a user wants to play a video off of the NAS they need to navigate through several menus as well.
Problem:
Users do not like having to search through multiple menus to find their videos and it is common for users to get lost in menu’s and contact me for help
Proposed solution:
My solution would be to remove all categories that are not needed such as removing Music, Movies, Pictures, Games. If possible i would only have 2 main categories removable storage and the NAS storage.
Im not sure if this is the right solution or even if its possible the end goal is to make it as easy as possible for users to navigate their files and remove anything that may confuse them. any thoughts, insights or ideas would be much appreciated.
I use my NAS exclusively for video content and am positive any movie is just 2 clicks away…
Main Menu → Movies(click 1) → Choose movie (2nd click), of course you need to set the path to your NAS but once done there is no need to do it again. I can’t comment on the microSD card.
SorruyI was mistaken, I use the NAS to backup my Macbooks and iPhones, but that is unrelated to the OSMC
Cheers, Al
If you are not wanting to scrape a library and instead just have a main menu link to a Kodi source then you just need to use a skin that allows such a thing and then configure it as such. Estuary, Kodi’s default skin, notably does not allow for this kind of modification. The OSMC skin, as well as others that can be installed, do. If you were using the OSMC skin you would navigate to settings>interface>configure skin>enable main menu customization> or, after that has been enabled, customize main menu. In that section you can both remove main menu items, add new ones, or customize existing ones to point to a great number of locations including a file view of specific sources.
If you were using Estuary you could go to its skin customization settings screen and disable any main menu items you didn’t want. In the main menu when you highlight the “videos” section you will see your sources listed as widgets as well as any auto mounted drives that were plugged in that allow for quick and easy access. Additionally one can add a source to specific folders on storage and just not configure scrapers on them. In this way you could have a source for Movies, TV, Kids, etc. that point to a file path instead of pointing to a base share or drive and requiring further navigation whenever someone wants to access their files.

Sorry i should have specified i’m using the default OSMC skin and using your instructions i was able to successfully hide all the other main menu items. if i wanted to mount the directory /mnt/unifi/Sort as a main menu item what would be the change action?
You would first add that network location as a Kodi source and then in the skins settings set the action with videos>sources>[name of source] (followed by selecting any subfolders if desired)>create menu item to here>files view.
