How is the Vero 4k at ATSC (mpeg2ts) with errors?

Hello!

Two questions as I’m interested in a Vero 4k…

How is it at mpeg2ts broadcast streams that have errors? That is, how is the player at recovering and playing in in spite of broadcast errors? I ask this because I have OSMC running on a RP2 and it does a pretty good job playing ATSC OTA via tvheadend hosted on another server, but sometimes the little box struggles to get past errors. I’m guessing this is due to the hardware decoding (I got the mpeg2 license for the RP2) and it just getting “stuck”, and having very little in terms of recovery support.

I know it can only play as good as the broadcast and I’ve done just about everything I can to get as clear as a signal as I possibly can but in spite of my efforts sometimes a gust of wind on a sunny day seems to provide the occasional error that the player will hang at. Sometimes it’s bad enough to kill the box and it auto reboots. This even happens off some recordings and I even post-process them through ffmpeg doing a stream copy if there’s more than a few recording errors.

If the Vero 4k can keep chugging along and get recover when the signal is good again then I’d be all in. My googling hasn’t been able to bring up peoples experience with this so I thought I’d ask here!

Second question: How is buying this box from the US? How long does it take to get over here and is there anything else I should be aware of?

Thanks!

Hi there,

LiveTV is always being improved. MPEG2 seems to play back very reliably.

Occasionally you might find a stream that will choke. The Vero 4K has enough power to decode MPEG2 in software however, and you can choose to disable hardware acceleration for MPEG2 exclusively (or only accelerate HD etc) in Kodi’s settings.

I’m particularly interested in clips that don’t play properly as we are always trying to improve things. If you have any clips you feel may be problematic, do let me know and I can try them out here.

If you have bad weather, you might notice some pixellation, but the device should wind down on discontinuities pretty promptly.

No customs or duties. You will get a US power supply.
You’ll be given a tracking #. Delivery is handled by USPS. It typically takes 3-5 working days, but might take a couple of days longer as we get nearer to Christmas.

Cheers
